HELP identifying orange spotted contam
    #8901873 - 09/09/08 12:28 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Hey so here are some pics from my first attempt at shroom cultivation. Early in their colonization time, they started to develop tiny orange clusters on the substrate. I was worried but being a noob I did not want to throw my cakes out just yet. I watched the mycelium slowly overgrow much of the contam. Over the weekend I checked on them and I saw that one of my cakes was starting to grow mushrooms inside the jar however, it was only 95% colonized. I decided to birth and cut away the uncolonized portion. This only lead me to a rabbit hole of orange contam spilling from the heart of the cake. This also showed me that a lot more of the cake was contaminated. I threw the other three questionable jars with mycelium growing away as well. After they broke open I saw that their entire insides where orange. What i suspect is that the mycelium would colonize the non-contam substrate and could grow over some of the smaller colonies of orange dots. However, in total, the cakes were lost from the beginning since the cores were the most infected.

Here are some pics of my disected cake. Any help identifying this contam would be awesome!

Cut open cake. You can see the intensity of the orange contaim against the white paper towel and mycelium.

One side.

The other side.

The two mushrooms I pulled off the side of the cake. I decided in the best interest of myself and those who would eat these that I would throw them out to avoid getting belligerently ill.

Peace.
