couldnt find any vermiculite. tomorrow I will try Lows and home dep. is it just me or do most stores not carry vermiculite? what size bags do they come in anyway? are there any substitutes even remotely good? what about peet moss, wood shavings, gravel, or even freshly picked grass? another question, I could not find brown rice flour but I bought a 5lb bag of whole wheat flour. will that do for the PF tek in substitute for brown rice? also they had 7 ounce marta sewart glasses but its a rip off anyhow. has anyone used non-tapered jars and just decided to break the jar to remove the rice cake? I have two candle holders that look about 1/2 pint to me

thanks for the info. I live in Florida so they might not have it in that state If I get the verm, Ill actually be able to start. Im gonna try whole wheat flour and see how good that works. Unless anyone strongly objects. I read somewhere that you can use wheat or rye powder with almost as good results? as for the jars My walmart doesnt have the right type so Ill have no choice but use the non-tampered jars and either break the cake or the jar

No offence, but it doesn't sound like your going to have much luck if your going to replace vermiculite with "gravel" or "freshly picked grass", and replace BRF with whole wheat flour. Your even trying to replace jars with candle holders. Haha
If this is your first go, don't substitute anything. You'll find Verm in almost every store (make sure your in the gardening section). You'll find BRF in your local grocery store (usually if they have a health food dept., check there. If not, just ask someone). If you use normal drinking glasses instead of jars, you shouldn't have to break anything. One of the stores you went to (to get BRF and verm) will definitely have canning jars. Good luck.

can someone show me a pic of a bag of vermiculite? will the bag say vermiculite or some other name? are there more than one brand? Ill look for medium-fine grade, but how large should the verm stones be? half the size of a pea? and will someone tell me what difference RBF and whole wheat flour have?

You'll know Vermiculite when you see it. At the Wal-Mart here, where I get my verm, I get bags that are about the size of... well... I don't know. Not too big. When I walk out, I'm usually carrying only 1 plastic bag which fits 1 bag of verm, and 1 bag of perlite. It's not like you need a bag so big that you'll need help carrying it. They will say VERMICULITE on them, and usually have pictures of it. There is also the cheap stuff that is in clear plastic bags and you can see in it... Anyway my point is, its very easy to find. Don't worry about missing it.

Try a Local hardware store....
i got mine from Ace (which is also true value) its a smaller non-home depo hardware store..... they also carry canning jars, if they dont have what u want ask them to order it for you....
as for Brown rice flour, try a local health food store... once again, if they dont have, they will probably order it for you... local stores are usually nicer about carrying something they dont usually have... they want your money, so they will go out of their way to get stuff for you that the big stores dont carry....
i had to try out 2-3 or even 4 stores to find some of the stuff i was looking for... but in the end i got everything needed.....

Hey LSA go to home depot they have verm....It should be in their outside garden department...But if you cant find it then just go ask a worker there. I asked and was presented with a pretty hefty bag of it...Oh yeah ...the bag will say vermiculite....

Hyper Dermic is right make friends with your local Ace Hardware man or woman. They have a huge catalog of items they don't stock in the store and will be happy to order anything for you if they can get it. Pretty reasonable prices as well.

It does not have to be organic. This has been stated many times and I know that you've read it.

Dude I live in Florida too-- Vermiculite is at Lowes (where I bought mine), and should also be at Home Depot-- I found that if you pick up a phone and call and ask, they usually can tell you if they carry it or not ;/

Avoid nurseries unless your desperate. I went to a nursery around here to ask a few questions about cultivating... uh... tomatoes and the lady actually asked me if I was going to do anything illegal with the knowledge she was "passing on to me". I was shocked, never went back there again. There's usually not very many people in there, and its hard to remain anonymous.
