Liberty Cap UK ID
    #8910905 - 09/11/08 04:31 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Today was a a weird one, sitting in the park smoking after work talking about our prospective mushroom gathering trip with our local guide when something caught my eye. To me this looks like a semilanceata. I could never be sure with my very limited knowledge so i hope these pics are enough for a positive ID.

I found this mushroom in Short - medium length grassland, it had dark grey almost black gills when i found it with a 5cm in length light brown stem drying slightly darker with some slight bruising at the root of the mushroom. The Head of the mushroom measures at 1 cm across.

happy hunts

Not a Massive hall, about 20-30 libs at that spot in the park and when i got there they were cutting the grass...i do not make a habit of running, usually only from police but luckily i got there in time. Spurred on by my find i started making tracks around some of our countryside yesterday and today, unfortunately all i got was wet feet and 3 libs!

Nice one. What altitude was this found at? Just went out looking today, but didn't find any. I'm on sea level, give or take.

The patch i found which i took 200 from was miles away from where that specimen in the picture came from, however it was probably around the same level in terms of sea. Im from the midlands in the UK and that averages between 100-150 metres above sea level, at a guess i reckon that spot was around 120 metres above sea level.

By the way i had a mind bending trip yesterday, thats what i've been waiting for since i got back from Thailand 4 months ago. Brewed up about 60 of them but nothing on what i was experiencing from the Thai shrooms eating them fresh, probably increase the dose next time and see if i can unlock a new world.

Anytime bud, a lot of newbies think it's best at night but its, err, dark!

A sunny day a day or two after a good rain is best. They stay out of the ground a good few days so anytime is fine. If other cnuts are gonna nab em though -go early!

Oh and please dont rip the roots out! A snip with a small pair of scissors is best to preserve any patches you find for years to come

Go out after a period of rain; a nice sunny and humid day and they will pop up everywhere. To answer UK Explorer, if the mushrooms are exposed to the sun, they will dry out after a while. While it reduces potency, they are still good to eat

I have been having alot of luck just north of you going out on my lunch breaks  Just wait till you get some rain and a decently sunny day and have a check. Even if you only find one patch, there is more to be around there, alls you need is that first patch and your set usually.

Any tips on where and how to find them. Live in glasgow and have a few idea where to go looking but any clues on what kinda sites are best would go a long way.

Livestock pastures with nettles/thistles weeds (prove the field has not been sprayed).

The odd reed type plant that appear in boggy areas are a good sign too

hey i went for a walk today after i heard some may start growing and found a few in a field.
Im not sure to be honest and been looking at other folks advice on it but have decided i really need a trained eye to say it all good.

and i did a spore print cause again heard thats the right thing to do

The print seem more blackish i dont know if you can tell with the photo i took but again any info would be great. There was a few more out there i could have picked but im doubting at this time they really are the real deal.

thanks for looking anyhow

I like saying Conocybe apala in these cases; there's also one or two that might be a Panaeolus or even a little Agrocybe; the cap in the 2nd pic is pretty out of focus.  But not libs.

Not sure exactly what that is, but I'm very sure it's not a lib cap, any of them.

Very sure.

Look for knarly long and twisty steams, a boob shaped cap with a pronounced nip, and blue bruising on the stems.

Right i have been reading up what i picked and with the spore print being jet black are they panaeolina subbalteatus?

Ive tested all the caps and they are all black on the white paper, so have i been lucky when looking for something else?

I didnt know anything about pan subbs until i looked up the black prints

you'll be extremely lucky to find libs at this time of year in the U.K.

Wait until september when the climate is right. make sure you get them before the first frost though.

When you do get them take a spore print.

I didn't think it was very easy to grow Lib caps? I was under the impression that it couldn;t be done, for some reason?

There is a thread on here where a myco-expert grew about 20 after 2 months of hard work. The idea was to try and domesticate a strain that grows easier, unless you get all the parameters of humidity temp substrate etc perfect, it wont work.
