A friend of mine has plans of opening up a mushroom farm. I was wondering which varieties of mushroom are the popular and tasty ones? and which is the best place to buy spores?
Any other information and links would be greatly appreciated
Thanks.

Go out and get a wild strain. Don't pick the mushroom, just leave a piece of paper around it and get (most) if it's spores, but leave it in place.
And morels. They're the best.

What type of experience in cultivating does he have?
I'd start with oysters and then work your way up. As for a wild strains... if you want to go that route you can just take a clone by sticking a syringe through the fruiting body and injecting that into an LC. Personally though I'd go ahead and order the cultures.
With more information we could help you out more. What type of grow room, and local climate?
By the way morels would be difficult to cultivate in an indoor setting.

Thank you for the replies. The goal is to grow Organic mushrooms that would be sold to restaurants. so do you think Oysters and Shitakkes would be the best bet?
as for the grow room, we are thinking of a barn. any better suggestions?
I am still hunting for spores, can anyone please send me a link to a website that sells highest quality spores?
Thanks

Any of the vendors have viable spores... A barn would work fine..it should be near airtight to hold moisture, and also not have exposed materials that will mold with moisture. (untreated wood, straw, ext..) I would suggest lining the fruiting room with plastic to ensure you keep moisture in, and away from other things. Experience is really the biggest factor when it comes to what strains to start with. If you have little to no experience you should start with oysters...they are very forgiving.
Just ask if you have more questions;)

I found it amusing too.
I would recommend reading as much about the subject as you possibly can, having some practice runs and informing yourself to the best of your abilities.
Then think about if you can make a business out of it or not.
You cant expect everyone else to do the research for you.
I have learned so much just reading everything that interested me about growing mushrooms- its all here!:)

Check out a mushroom depot. What these types of places do is pull in all types of mushrooms from the area into one depot where places like pizza pizza, etc will pick up sliced product. Buy some of each variety and offer them up to restaurants as a sample. From there you can negotiate a small profit from selling them, if you manage to spark a market in the restaurants around you. From there, you'll have an idea of which mushroom to grow if you feel that growing is more viable than just being a middle man. You may have to look long and hard to find such a depot, however they do exist! Just an opinion, good luck with your venture!

Peter Oei's book kind of picks up stuff Stamet's leaves out. He covers things like how they grow mushrooms in developing countries, gives good insight on how to do things with limited resources.
Unfortunately if you have limited resources you probably can't afford the book, I've seen it priced at over $200. Try to find it used, I would say it is worth up to $100. It is more like a textbook than anything.

Shampinion and portobello are grown by BIG companies and im sure your friend cant compiet with them. If he plan growing for restaurants then he might want to start with Shitakkes, Morels, and some Oysters. I presonally grow Shaggy mane and restaurants might be interested in this kind of shroom also

I would tend to agree regarding buttons/criminis. The profit margin on these is incredibly low.
Here's an idea: Cultivate local, native species of mushrooms and market them to Slow Food advocates.
This is what I think I'm going to start doing myself. There's a local farmer's market near me that has tons of yuppie traffic, and it's also very close to various embassies in town, so we get a lot of asian and european people there as well. There's a vendor there who sells buttons and criminis, and oysters on occasion, so there's definitely a niche to exploit...
Last weekend I brought an oyster log to the crazy goat cheese lady with the violet hair and traded it for some delicious cajeta, caramel made with goat's milk. She went absolutely crazy over it, and it was amusing seeing her face light up when I showed her a picture of one fruiting. I could definitely sell those too! Hm.

<--- oyster mushroom farmer
Btw, a large basement is suitable for growing, not a barn. Wood room + constant 80% rh is a recipe for disaster.
Spores can be ordered from sporeworks.com , spores101.com , and many other reliable vendors. You have A LOT of reading ahead of you if you want to do large scale mushroom farming. Best to srart small and work up.
Here is how I do my oysters: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/8855610/an/0/page/0

Spores101 is NOT a reliable vendor, speaking from direct experience, nor are they a sponsor so shouldn't be mentioned here regardless.
Great details on the grow Buckeye. Have you ever considered trying to mount a couple hot water tank elements on those tanks instead of using wood?
