Re: Psilocybe caerulipes [Re: wisp]

I had a few requests for prints so I went on another foray to get a few.  The foray resulted in more confusion and perhaps some answers for the confusion between Ovoids and Rules.

Here are the pictures:

The first one is P. caerulipes.  I know this without checking because it was in the same area as the other ones.  Note the slight umbo.  Unfortunately they are both too far gone to produce a print.  :frown:

The second mushroom is not the same.  I suspect it is an Ovoid though I haven't examined the spores yet.  Look at the cap and stipe.  I think there are a variety of morphological types for Ovoids.  I haven't searched the database for other photos though.  I am interested in what that will turn up.

Look at the patches on the stipe.

And the gills.

This specimen was found in the same area.  Note the difference between it and the one above.  It might be a Rule.

Gill coloration and form.

Slight blue on cap margin:

Slight blue on stipe:

Being prepared for the Sporulator Jr.

Printing began immediately and I will be checking it shortly.

Great work Hongos, nice writeup you've made. Could the latter species be anything other than P. caerulipes?

Crap! I'm going to have to check every vaguely Mycena-like wood grower I find in the woods now...They've been coming up in droves over the past couple days...Any tips on to look for specifically?

Sure.  The thing is,Trip, that most mushrooms have been identified.  Occasionally, at rare times, a new species will present itself.  This is most common in species that are nondescript or rarely fruit.  Large species and small species have been studied as have colorful--hard-to-miss--species.

HoneyComber is correct.  The second one looks like a Mycena, until you flip it over and look at the gills.  I checked on the prints and they are doing piss poor so I raised the humidity and temperature a bit.  Now I'll have to babysit them so they don't decay on me.

N2loma-One key to finding these are extraordinary high-humidity microclimates sheltered from any wind.  Tall grass, beside a log, etc.

The first specimens were discovered in a dense Hemlock grove.  The second specimens were found in an area of high grass with smaller woody brush.  I have never found a single specimen that was exposed to the wind.  Of course, that doesn't mean that can't happen though.

This area is so humid I literally had sweat dripping off my forehead in 70 degree weather, all from humidity.

*edit  Excitement could have played a role in that too.

those are rare mushrooms indeep , one could posible be caerulipides right and the other  may be something else or you can confirm the ovoid.

I don't discount the idea that there may be 3 active Psilocybes here.  That would be really strange.

I'm starting to feel like the cactu of Northeastern United States.  Maybe you rubbed off on me.

I appreciate you, mi amigo, siempre.
