I believe on some interview, one of the scientists said the charge or whatever wasn't even strong enough to light up a light bulb.
Maybe I heard wrong. Either way; life is but a dream, man.

On a serious note what if this is how our universe began?
An intelligent species in another universe set out to recreate there beginning and we are just there experiment?
What if we create a smaller universe outside of this one with this machine and it develops life?
Or what if we are creating our universe and time really is fractaline?

I'm fairly certain nothing is going to happen to anyone.
How are they going to see what happens? You can't exactly look at atoms colliding... How are they recording their findings?

They've turned it on multiple times before, and tested it with the atoms going in one direction, are you sure they are just turning it on wednesday?
Why would there be so much publicity?

it's the largest atom smasher in the world. It will collide atoms much... better.... than the smaller ones!

it's larger, and the atoms will collide at 99.999% the speed of light, a speed the smaller atom smashers can't achieve.
The hope is that somehow, out of this, the particles will show us what happened with the big bang. Personally, I have no idea what these two events have to do with each other.
But none-the-less, it is fascinating.

I have much experience using particles accelerators... This one, although much bigger, is no different than the ones already being used. So you DO NOT have to worry about about being sucked into a black hole.... and if it causes the end of humanity....you have no need to worry

Being sucked into a blackhole would be one of the pimpest ways to die. Think of the street cred you've have in the afterlife!
Dead_thug01: "So how'd you die?" Dead_thug02: "Man, I got shot!" Dead_thug01: "That's fucking sweet bro!" Unbeliever: "Pussies, I was crushed into oblivion by a black hole" Everyone: "Whoa!"

I can't wait! I've been following the construction of this for quite sometime. (I'm a big Physics nut)
The accelerator is 17miles long, between the border of France and Switzerland. As Drewwyann said, it will be the closest we can actually get to the speed of light.
The send the particles in opposite directions building their speed the direct them into each other. Taking picture's with many different recording devices. Here's an example of a picture

Through these kind of speed's they hope to identify unknown particles that were most likely present withing .001secs of the big bang. It's the equivalent of turning on a light and trying to watch the light spread around the room, but to our eyes the light is 'on' or 'off.'
I personally don't think we're all going to die, but who knows, if somehow they did cause a black hole, we'll all be dead before anyone knows a thing.

How would the money be wasted?
If this experiment doesn't conglomerate the standard model, then it will allow for completely new (better) ideas to blossom.
There are several aspects of the standard model which are pretty 'flakey' and currently, with what we have established, are unable to understand.
No matter what the outcome of this experiment, it will not be a waste of money. It will answer some of the definitive questions that plague particle physics, whether they are what the standard model predicts or something else entirely.

They built it to see if the hadron atomic model really exists. Perhaps our universe was created by one of these colliders and our billions of years are but a fraction of a millisecond.

I hated physics class in spite of it being an interesting topic. I do however, love my poli sci classes and wouldn't be a bit surprised if the first "advances" you see from the Hadron experiments will be a new form of weapon or way to hurt others. Assuming this effects the international balance of power, there will be a leveling period (conflict) then more everyday uses will be devised.
Historical examples of this would include...
man creates a bow and arrow and kills with it. Years later man takes the bow and arrow concept of a string under tenson to create a piano.
E=mc2 ended WWII and now the brilliant scientist can sit back and enjoy as the worlds much less enlightened politicians hold the button to our destruction.
To quote an article i read about the LHC "man kind has never learned something and not used it."
Shroomery; why do you suppose the wealthy nations of the world donated 5 billion to this effort with no clear (non abstract) application in the future? The people that fund this EXPECT tangible results, and do not simply endeavor to reveal mysteries of the universe.
speaking on the responsibility of man, Lets not forget the first Manhattan project detonation. Leading up to the initial experiment Einstein himself agreed to the notion there was a small chance the nuclear chain reaction would burn the entire earth's atmosphere away. They detonated anyway.

Well what is good, and what is bad?
Really,
That's a big ole' fucking can of worms bro.
Morality.
Shit...
"good" is something that becomes allowed and helps a lot of people and which soon fades from the majority of uneducated people. i mean uneducated on the subject of science etc. "bad" is something new and unknown, like truly new so the public have no frame of reference about it and they instinctively fear it, having no desire to actually educate them on the subject. so the "moral majority" just by principle rages against the new inventions and gadgets without knowing why and letting their fears run wild because its easier to study up.

Expect more of the same - the LHC was activated at 3 PM Eastern Standard Time. If it didn't destroy the world yet it's not going to later today.

Wait... so they activated it yesterday? Because I'm pretty sure 3PM EST hasn't happened yet today...

They havn't started the particle collisions yet though. They have only tried the accelerator.
I thinks its 2 weeks before they start the collisions and the minblack hole sucks in the Earth and kills us all.

Just imagine what damage a bunch of really bored physicists could (and would) do. Consider those $5b an investment in your personal safety, compared to the alternative

Exactly, that's one part I didn't agree with.

Tangible in what way? A thought is a mear impulse in our brain. Thoughts are regarded second to capitol gain anyways. Tangible would be a cold fusion engine, or a new type of ray gun.
shurley there are people who care about discovery and whole hearted efforts to define physics. What real abstract goals they have for Hadron and finding the missing particle etc. are surely what will be studied and highly regarded hopefully, but someone somewhere wants a monetary return on their 5 billion dollars. And a lot of people in swiss land will be focused on that as well.
I appreciate your sentiment, i just feel like somethings going on. Something with a grave application for our new understanding.

I can assure you they don't. My salary is funded by research grants, and all they expect in return is good science, not money. It's the same all over the world, and it's the same for the LHC.
Which is good! Any other way would discourage true basic research in poorly-understood fields.

INDIAN GIRL COMMITS SUICIDE FEARING THE END OF THE WORLD
A 16-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh allegedly committed suicide after watching news on channels about possibility of the end of earth following the atom-smasher experiment in Geneva that began on Wednesday.
Chhaya, a resident of Sarangpur town in Rajgarh district, consumed sulphos tablets (an insecticide) yesterday, her parents said.
The girl was rushed to Indore's MY Hospital where she succumbed on Wednesday.
Her parents told reporters she was watching about the world's biggest atom-smasher experiment in Geneva on news channels since the last two days following which she got restless and ended her life.
Police have registered a case in this regard and further probe was on.
The experiment is being carried out to recreate the birth of universe and unlock its secrets. Scientists have rubbished reports of threat to the planet due to the experiment.
