so far, today has been anti-climatic.

Ya...A black hole would be awesome? I love how people say stuff like that. As if when the whole room tilted, and then tore apart you'd just sit there, "grooving on it".

I hated physics class in spite of it being an interesting topic. I do however, love my poli sci classes and wouldn't be a bit surprised if the first "advances" you see from the Hadron experiments will be a new form of weapon or way to hurt others. Assuming this effects the international balance of power, there will be a leveling period (conflict) then more everyday uses will be devised.
Historical examples of this would include...
man creates a bow and arrow and kills with it. Years later man takes the bow and arrow concept of a string under tenson to create a piano.
E=mc2 ended WWII and now the brilliant scientist can sit back and enjoy as the worlds much less enlightened politicians hold the button to our destruction.
To quote an article i read about the LHC "man kind has never learned something and not used it."
Shroomery; why do you suppose the wealthy nations of the world donated 5 billion to this effort with no clear (non abstract) application in the future? The people that fund this EXPECT tangible results, and do not simply endeavor to reveal mysteries of the universe.
speaking on the responsibility of man, Lets not forget the first Manhattan project detonation. Leading up to the initial experiment Einstein himself agreed to the notion there was a small chance the nuclear chain reaction would burn the entire earth's atmosphere away. They detonated anyway.

"good" is something that becomes allowed and helps a lot of people and which soon fades from the majority of uneducated people. i mean uneducated on the subject of science etc. "bad" is something new and unknown, like truly new so the public have no frame of reference about it and they instinctively fear it, having no desire to actually educate them on the subject. so the "moral majority" just by principle rages against the new inventions and gadgets without knowing why and letting their fears run wild because its easier to study up.

Expect more of the same - the LHC was activated at 3 PM Eastern Standard Time. If it didn't destroy the world yet it's not going to later today.

Wait... so they activated it yesterday? Because I'm pretty sure 3PM EST hasn't happened yet today...

They havn't started the particle collisions yet though. They have only tried the accelerator.
I thinks its 2 weeks before they start the collisions and the minblack hole sucks in the Earth and kills us all.

Just imagine what damage a bunch of really bored physicists could (and would) do. Consider those $5b an investment in your personal safety, compared to the alternative
