Amazing finds, what state were these found, and what habitat, that'd be awesome if you get some photos of these babies in their natural scene next time you're picking.

Cool, those just look so amazing, they almost look like Lizard Kings unnamed species down here in GA. I theorize that woodlovers like these arent just located in one central area, but are endemic through out the country, in various varieties due to their distribution, that only explains to me why weilii, villaeari, and azures and cyanascens up north appear very similar.

I'm not willing to say more about location. This is a pic of the plot.
Very unique habitat with sphagnum, pitcher plants, ferns and other mushrooms. In a bog. Don't know what type of trees because the logs were cut and laid down for the path on the wet ground...all mixed together.

Keep lookin. I've spent years doing this. Always look downhill where moisture collects and wood rots. There are caerulipes in your neighborhood. They are not common or easy to find, but you wont have a shot if you don't look.

After more field work, I've come up with this... Cap:1/4"-1 1/2". Obtusely conic, to conic-campanulate, to broadly convex when fully mature, sometimes wavy, but almost always retaining an acute umbo. Caramel, to brown, to mahogany brown. Surface is slightly viscid from barely seperable gelatinous pellicle. Margin transluscent striate when young. Cap fades when dry to a cinnamon color then eventually to a tan color with dark bruises where it has been damaged. Gills are close, not attatched to the stem smokey turning almost black. Sporeprint is purple brownish. Stem: 1"-5" long 3/32"-3/16" thick, pallid to brownish with whitish fibrils. No annulus noted.Straight, slightly thickening toward the base. Fibrous, hollow and brittle above, pithy and flexuous below. Bruises dark brown when handled. Habitat: Solitary to gregarious, rarely cepitose from well rotted and waterlogged wood in sphagnum moss . Early Sept. in NY.
I think Allan might have had it right the first time. Psilocybe montana. Worth the bio-essay?

Yea looks like a great match for P. montana, especially the stem in the last photo. Good match for the habitat too.
Maybe its a gourmet psilocybe but in the absence of bluing I can't recommend that you eat it. Its not really a good idea to eat little brown mushrooms that don't bruise blue. If its confirmed as Psilocybe montana it might be ok to fry up.

Certainly a psilo, the bruising could be similar to how pan subs bruise, either way glorious finds.

Nice finds, I love the habitat shots! From looking at those last images I think they resemble Psilocybe atrobrunnea more than they do P. montana. Your excellent description also agrees better with P. atrobrunnea. Also the habit, habitat and fruiting season are a match! It looks like you are in a lowland peat bog, P montana is more common at higher altitudes, P. atrobrunnea prefers the habitat you describe. It would be interesting to examine the microscopic features and maybe come up with a definite id! inski..

You're right. It definitely fits the description better. Is anyone experienced with this species? They bruised pretty rapidly, it just wasn't blue. From the dark coloration perhaps? Can anyone tell from the bark (not the white birch) what trees these were? They grew in conjunction with the sphagnum, they grew ON these logs. Stamets says weakly active. Hope no deadly corts are mixed in! Collected some larger, darker sporeprints for trade.
Found tons of these!

Hi Bobzimmer, Once again, nice finds! I would not recommend you sample any of these due to the lack of definite blue bruising, it's too easy for a mistake to happen, be careful! You should get some microscopy done on these! inski..

I'm with you. The bruising is tempting the shit out of me, but I'm not the hasty type. I sent samples to workman and am eagerly awaiting his analysis, though I think you may have nailed the ID.
