Hi, I have a question regarding how to start edible spores such as shiitake? I do not have agar, yet. but I was curious if its possible to start spores on wbs? I have sporeprints (shiitake) and no agar! So is wbs ok? Thanks!
Isn't that how shiitake mushrooms did it for millions of years before people figured out how to cultivate them?
Yes, you certainly can. There is tons of info on this site regarding the differences between isolated strains and multispore growing. Your results will be inconsistent, which is why most commercial growing uses strains which have been selected for desireable qualities like speed of growth or fruit quality.
If you don't have access to agar (it's actually quite cheap if you make it yourself), you can also use cardboard to germinate spores and attempt to isolate strains that way.
