I need to buy one but I'm not sure what's good in terms of money and quality, or what I should be looking for in general.
Any suggestions?

If you'll be carrying it around much with a laptop then consider getting a 2.5" drive - they are smaller, quieter and lighter and (best of all) don't require a power brick as they're powered entirely by USB. They are more expensive though, and slower. I used to have a 3.5" but replaced it with a 2.5".

I personally would recommend a Western Digital SATA 3.5" HDD and buy your enclosure separately. Avoid USB as your primary means for transferring data, as the transfer speed is only about 480Mbps, assuming nothing else is using the bus at the same time. SATA on the other hand can handle data transfer rates of up to 3.0Gbps for SATA II and 1.5Gbps for SATA I.
In order to take advantage of this speed though, you will need internal HDDs also at this speed. I personally have always had the best luck buying all the components separately. Best of luck.

I only buy Seagate. One of the drives in my room computer is over 7 years old. No problems. I've had two Western Digitals fail on me.
I currently have four 500gb internal Seagates and 2 1TB FreeAgent Pro externals on my main computer and they all run flawlessly.
I Seagate.
