This post concerns PF-tek and the preparations before you through your jars into the pressure cooker...I am posting after reading this post by FD3000 where he/she stated:
"It doesnt matter if you washed your hands, you can piss in a jar(maybe not) and as long as you pressure cook it there's no problem!"

So is it a waste of time to methodically sterilize our work-area prior to pressure cooking if the PCin' is going to kill all the bacteria anyway? This would be an incredible time-saver if this is true!

I think if you PC it or even just pour boiling water all bacteria will die
|

Nope it is not a waste of time. We sterilize the work area to reduce the risk of bacteria and baddies in the air and on work surfaces. PC'ing is good. It is great. It is not foolproof. Because it is not 100% effective it is essential to try and reduce the number of contams that your material is exposed to. This is a science which does take some patience. It shouldn't take that long to sterilize your work area, depending on the size. With out it, you may save 5-10 minutes in a process that takes a few weeks from start to beginning. Instead of saving 10 minutes you could wind up loosing weeks worth of work. Why risk it?

Pre PC needs not be sterile. After PC, be as clean as possible. Simple as that.

i dont go through all the trouble most people do, i just mix in a clean pot or bowl, with a clean spoon. throw in some tap water, sometiems i wipe the rim of the jar before i add the dry verm layer. then cook in a pot with water for an hour and that does fine. i havent experienced any visible contams yet, only some jars dont grow (that happened once) and some jars stop growing and/or look darker and some smell bad.
most has to do with steralizing the needle and making sure no contams get in the jars after or during innoculation

I agree completely. I handle all substrates with impunity exposing them to anything and everything before I PC them. Haven't had any issues yet.
