Gentoo linux help
#8890154 - 09/07/08 09:12 AM (15 years, 8 months ago) |

So, i took the plunge and spent most the day yesterday setting up a gentoo linux install, compiling the kernel, copying it over, setting up all the configurations, all that fun stuff. Anyways, i got through everything just fine, until i go to reboot after installing grub and writing my grub.conf.
so my problem is that whenever i try to boot into my gentoo linux install, i get 'GRUB: ERROR 22' which means that my partition does not exist. Here is my partitioning table Code:
/dev/sdb1 NTFS (windows xp pro) /dev/sdb2 ext2 /boot /dev/sdb3 none swap /dev/sdb4 ext3 /
So, then, in my /boot/grub/grub.conf I have this:
Code:
default 0 timeout 15 splashimage=(hd1,1)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Gentoo Linux 2.6.25-r7 root (hd1,1) kernel /boot/linux-2.6.25-gentoo-r7 root=/dev/sdb4
title Gentoo Linux 2.6.25-r7 (rescue) root (hd1,1) kernel /boot/linux-2.6.25-gentoo-r7 root=/dev/sdb4 init=/bin/bb
title Windows XP Professional rootnoverify (hd1,0) makeactive chainloader +1
So, after getting the error, it says press any key to continue, i do so, and whenever i do I am able to boot the windows xp install, but the linux install will still give me Error 22, no such partition. However, the partition is definitely there, as I can see it in both windows and off the live cd. Also, grubs autofill using the 'tab' button, shows that it is there. Any help would be great, its aggrivating to spend so much time setting it up for grub to make it not work ...
thanks for any help

grub always gave me shit in a gentoo install mostly it just didn't even want to work at all it always pissed me off
is it not finding the /boot or the /root? this is very familiar
boot flag on /boot? try entering different values in (hd1,1) -- (hd1,2) i know that doesn't make sense but i believe i had to feed it some funky values one time and just kept fucking with it in the 'edit boot line?' in the grub menu until i got it to go

What stage is grub getting to before it errors out?
Where do you have grub installed on the HDD? (I haven't played around with it in five or six years, but back then it only supported int 0x13, which means it (the second stage loader) had to be located in the first couple GB of the hard drive.) I always made a tiny 1 cylinder FAT32 partition at the start of the disk to hold grub to ensure that stage 1.5 and stage 2 load properly.

if you can't get it to work, before you trash it, you might want to try installing ubuntu on another partition the auto installer is pretty good about finding other operating systems when it is configuring grub. there is a chance that it will find your gentoo install set it up for you
ive had a lot of trouble with grub on gentoo installs. one trick i learned is to install ubuntu or debian first. This gets grub set up for you. you can build your gentoo system from inside your other linux install, then just modify the boot loader config (menu.lst on ubuntu)
i know how it feel to waste a whole day and then get fucked by grub.

i compiled my own kernel for it. But I have it working now, evidently this was the problem.
When running off the liveCd, whenever i would go to install grub, the automated installer would not work, always looked for a floppy drive, even with the --no-floppy option, so I had to do it manually with:
Code:
# grub --no-floppy
And that would work just fine. When in the manual installer, you can use the TAB key to show you what you need, for instance, i would use:
Code:
root (
and press tab, which would display
Code:
hd0 hd1
my install was done on sdb (hd1), so i would then have
Code:
root (hd1,
and press tab, it would show me the 4 partitions i setup, so it must be the right disk i thought. Anyways, after that i would type the following since my /boot partition was on sdb2
Code:
root (hd1,1) setup (hd1) quit
which would finish up the installer.
Anyways, the problem i think is happening, when having a kernel booted, grub is looking in my /dev folder to see how my drives are setup. But, when I am actually booting, grub looks at the order your drives are booted, so even though my OS hdd was on SATA Port1, not SATA Port0, i still had SATA Port1 booting first, and without a kernel running yet, all grub can look at is the BIOS, which does load my OS harddrive first. Anyways, it would work with hd(0,1) to boot, but it just seemed so weird to me that it would work that way. I decided to go ahead and swap my hdd around so that it made better since to me. Anyways, now my OS drive boots first, and is the drive on SATA Port0, so it gets assigned sda.
Whats even weirder, is that windows would still boot fine, whether it was set as (hd1,0) or (hd0,0), before ever switching the drives. Regardless of what i typed in there, it would always boot, even (hd3,7), which doesn't even exist.
Anyways, grub is weird, but i figured it out after a couple hours of fiddling with it, and it works now. I have just got to get some more stuff installed now, but i have X11 compiled, configured, and running correctly, and the kdebase package compiled, configured, and running properly under user. Now just to get some more apps going.

I wish I could help you, but I use LILO, not GRUB.
GRUB hasn't been worked on in the last 2 years and all effort is in GRUB2, which is not usable at the moment or in the near future...
Is there an option to install LILO instead of GRUB? But it sounds like you solved the problem...
LILO = LinuxLoader

Why am I not surprised your name is "supra"? As they say, Gentoo is rice.
Save yourself the trouble and use Debian.

the only trouble i had was with grub, not gentoo itself. Works fine for me anyways. If you don't like it, why the fuck did you even click on my thread. I usually use PCLinuxOS, but wanted to try something new on this computer.
Not only that, most of the quotes on that page you linked, are not all that funny, maybe i just missed the humor somehow?

Genkernel makes life a lot easier, especially with all the built in hardware detection (no need for hot/coldplug). You can still choose what you want in the kernel as well; genkernel --menuconfig all.
My current issue is getting alsa to work properly with my usb soundcard.. its being a complete bitch.
With the automated installer, try something like:
grub-install --no-floppy /dev/sdb

yeah, i had tried that Cepheus, but even using the --no-floppy, the damn thing would still be looking for fd0, fail, look again, fail, of course, because i have no floppy...anyways, the manual method worked fine, but it was the drive mapping that was screwy, its fixed now.
Also, that genkernel --menuconfig all, im guessing this would be before an install off the live disk? Or is this if the genkernel is already running. My daughter wants me to put gentoo on her comp too now, but having to get a working kernel compiled isn't easy, took me 2 tries, and i would rather not set up that menu again...lol

the gentoo installer has been broken i thought since forever...
"but having to get a working kernel compiled isn't easy, took me 2 tries, and i would rather not set up that menu again...lol"
lol
only twice?
my first time setting up gentoo, i used the 'make menuconfig' method of configuring the kernel, and somehow was able to boot after the first try, but then i updated the kernel sources and spent about 3-4 hours trying to get the new kernel to work...
typically i can emerge gentoo-sources, configure, and compile all in about 30 minutes now
grub never game me a problem with looking for a floppy though, that's strange
dont listen to these debian/ubuntu-fags thinking gentoo is comprised of solely compiling shit and tweaking C-flags. Once you get your initial install set up, it is very easy to maintain, especially since portage is so much more awesome than shitty apt
i dont know if it is really all that much faster in general, but when i was dual booting gentoo and slackware on this laptop, gentoo out-performed slack by several seconds on pretty much all operations, been a while since i used ubuntu though
some advice though, get the most current GCC now while you still have a small system, i recently upgraded GCC and took about 50+ hours for everything to complete...

Take a look at Sabayon linux. It does a Gentoo install in about 30 minutes.

i thought the point of using gentoo was to compile all your software to be optimized for your architecture/hardware...

it is, but how about you get a working gentoo installation in 30 minutes, then go in and tweak your make.conf and do an emerge -e world in the background while you are using your functioning install. Upon reboot, you will have everything optimized for your computer and still not have to go through the hastle of a gentoo install.
and before anyone starts, i understand the great learning experience of doiing a gentoo install by hand. i have done it many times over the last 6 years i have been a gentoo'r. now when i want to install a gentoo based system, i install sabayon to get it up and running fast, then do all y tweeking in the background.

I will check out Sabayon for her comp...
just got done installing firefox, flash, and a java runtime environment for my browser, and it was a big pain in the ass for 64 bit system...lol. Anyways, I also got amarok installed, i was surprised at all the dependencies for it though...anyways, so far so good now, im liking it.
time for thunderbird install for my emails (unless there is a better one, i used it on windows and always liked it).

that's a good idea
i always install from a chroot environment through a live cd or a second partition so as not to be stranded in front of a black and white terminal for hours while x compiles, but then my wireless card tends to play well with live cd's and/or is really quick to setup on something like ubuntu

alright, have another question for the gentoo/linux users around here. If you use usenet, what client do you use? I have been running on my xp box for a while, and use SABnzbd+ on it, along with the greasemonkey script addon to firefox, and i just love the setup. I see it is possible to use here, but not very easy since I am running on the amd64 architecture (quad core intel). Anyways, if there are any better ones, let me know, I mainly download nzb files from newzbin...
