These are popping up like crazy!
    #8886152 - 09/06/08 10:34 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
Growing out from the bottom of white pine, and other random decaying stumps.

Gills:
Specimens still very young. Gills seems to be crowded, attached.

Stem:
lengths varying, up to about 10cm long, 1cm thick. Not hollow.

Cap:
5cm on larger mushrooms.

Spore print color:
In progress...

Bruising:
None noted at this time.

Other information:
Mushroom smells very sweet. I'm assuming it's some kind of edible because the wildlife seem to enjoy it, as I saw a lot of caps bitten off of the older specimens. Very pronounced ring below cap on older examples. These just started popping up a day or two ago and they are everywhere now, growing rapidly.

Doing some research, it seems these may be Gymnopilus Luteus? Gotta wait for the spore print.

EDIT: Looks likely that it could be Armillaria mellea also.

Alan posted Armillaria because it is very difficult to identify these to species.  Some mushrooms look identical and aren't; others look the same and aren't.

Cool looking parasite though.

Personally, I haven't tried them, but apparently they should be boiled off to remove the somewhat bitter flavor and then processed in any desired way.

I've heard you have to cook them, or they are mildly poisonous, so i'd go with Koraks suggestion
