hi everyone

hi everyone,
im new to this site, and also new to the hobby. The other day i received my two syringes of P.C. Tasmania. My friend, also a newcomer, has ordered one of p.c. cambodia, and one p.c. B+. My question is, can i use whole wheat flour or Rye flour. Also, i am planning on starting near 20 jars(yes it may be a little stupid to do soo much as a beginner) but ive spent many hours researching the methods and techniques. what kind of yields could i expect growing on 1 quart cakes in a rubbermaid terranium? any ballpark estimate would be appreciated as i am a newcomer to all this.any repplies would be greatly appreciated, and good shroomin to everyone. peace

i haven't got that far yet in my practices but i can tell you straight off... one thing i've found INVALUABLE is the double ended tek. you put a thin layer of vermiculite at the BOTTOM as well as the top.  i'm sure everyone knows about it, it's in the tek's. i swear, using that tek i can practically SEE the mycelium growing. it shaves at least 2 days off the incubation time.

Dude, do you know how long it takes for a quart jar, PF style, to colonize. FOR-EV-ERRRRR. My buddy's took something like around 2 months, but that was a while ago, and it may have taken longer than that. As for yeild, I saw somewhere that a cake 1/2 pint cake can produce anywhere from 0-8 oz. dry per flush. Since there are 2 pints in a quart, there are 4 1/2 pints. So you should get anywhere from 0-32 grams per flush per cake. (that's a big range, and its all dependent upon growth parameters.) Welcome to the hobby.

Go with 1/2 pint PFTEK jars---- Don't bother with the verm on the bottom like the other guy replied, just follow the PFTEK to the T and you should be good to go. But if you have read quite a bit, might as well just case them (not much harder at all) with something like the 50/50+ tek.

quart jars take longer, but you get more shrooms!

"quart jars take longer, but you get more shrooms! "
how would you know?

Ontop of taking forever to colonize there is an increased chance of contam.

f8l and Matts, were you guys replying to me, cause I already know that, but thanks for the info. Sometimes my buddy likes to get a little wild and he uses pint jars for PF style. Takes a little longer, but not too bad.

im using simple logic there. more volume in a quart, more nutrution, more area for more shrooms to grow.

one more thing, I will be trying jars of several sizes from 1/4 pints to 2 pint sizes. wonder the advantages of 1/4 pint!

Except for all the mold and bacteria thats gonna take it over after like 2 months while you're still waiting for it to colonize....

Than apply more logic and realize that the more volume = longer colonization time = higher risk of contams. 1/2 pints are easy. I hate to sound like an assohole, but its so funny, cause some newbies expect to Run before they can stand. Remember, Baby steps.

"but they're too tiny...not worth it in my opinion"

not enough shrooms or yields? wont two 1/4 pint jars be as good as a 1/2 pint? good if yer in a hurry or dont want to waste too much verm and substrate.

as for larger jars, if its properly sterilized, why will contams come after like 2 months? not 100% airtight so they make their way very slowly? I guess you got a point there. you can use 4 1/2 pints and get better results faster than a single quart jar anyway and also if contams occur, they may not be in all 4 jars.

My cat's gonna start using agar and grain techniques soon as he finishes the casings he's workin on now. He's so jazzed!
And LSA:
That's more or less it, there's always some possibility that a contam will get in no matter what you do, so you want mycelium fully colonized quick as possible.

oh yea also youd need a huge PC to fit in a quart jar anyway! I guess the same theory applies to mitotis of celluar orgainisms. they divide when they get too big cause they cant obtain enough nutritions since 2x the volume wont give you 2x the surface area

ok, how about if i use pint jars, is that too bad an idea, the only problem is all i cAn find is quart jars, guess ill keep on looking. also, on the thehawkseye.com, were i got the syringes, it says that tasmania is an extremely fast colonizer, faster than most other "fast strains".

A quart jar has a larger surface area than a half pint jar, but four half pint jars have a much larger surface area than a quart jar. Bottom line; Four half pint jars will colonise faster, have a larger surface area (for shrooms to grow on), and have a lower contamination risk (or rather, if one jar is contaminated, you won't lose all of them).

Anyway, any comments on the rye flour question? I've been wondering the same myself...

I agree with matts. For a newbie I would not really recomend using whole pints. Lilke he said, 5 weeks is generally the colonization time. I've used them before and have had them colonize anywhere from 4-7 weeks. Plus being a newbie there is a better chance of a contam, but not always. Try and stick to the teks as much as possible when you are starting out, you will benifit from it in the long run.

f8l.. why not bother with the verm on the bottom? even if you've been partially lobotomized it's pretty hard to mess up the double ended tek and it speeds up the process substantially. If he's using PF jars it'll also help prevent any possible stalling on the bottom of the jar, thus negating the need to go prying. I dunno, i think the double ended tek is a good thing to do with all your PF jars. it can't hurt but it sure as poop can help.
