Cats and Dogs (Juxtaposition Class)
    #8881973 - 09/05/08 11:51 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

So today I had my into class for Engineering Economics, followed by my intro class for Engineering Ethics II (environmental ethics this section).

*********************************************************

The engineering economics class was taught by a slightly older man, well composed, emotionally constrained.

He spoke about the definitive art of budget design and how it was needed in the industry, because money was a serious thing that all engineering projects were forced to include.

He talked about economic forecasting as being unpredictable;
he explained that this meant it was important to conceive all the variables in your model so any circumstance could be interpolated and responded to.

He kept an atmosphere of silence in the classroom, you could tell by how everything was presented that he did not want you to speak.

He explained that it would be important to buy the textbook, and to read all the material in advance so that you knew what was going on before you attended class. He said there would be lots of reading in his class.

He mentioned near the end that he was not going to bring politics into the class;
but if we must know he leaned to the right.

Following that he went on a brief tangent about how he could not believe the handouts that were given to some of the home owners in New Orleans, 'who had their houses in the friggin ocean'! From a cost-benefit analytical perspective, of course.

He said money was decidedly a black and white thing;
despite its uncertainty we were to be expected to account for it.

*********************************************************

The engineering ethics class was taught by a slightly younger woman, well composed, emotionally expressed.

She mentioned right from the start that politics would be involved in the class;
she made it known she leaned to the left and you must tolerate that.

She had a fiery personality;
she was also pregnant and made mention of 'her tenant' in case she needed to excuse any future pauses in her lectures.

She spoke about the uncertain art of environmental precaution and how it was needed in the industry, because nature was a serious thing that was forced to include all engineering projects.

She talked about environmental forecasting as being unpredictable;
she explained that this meant it was necessary to environmentally constrain all the variables in your design so every circumstance could be better reacted to.

She kept an atmosphere of curt conversation in the classroom, you could tell by how everything was presented that you should know what she wanted you to say.

She explained that it would not be important to buy any textbook, but to read material you find on your own so that it may be discussed in class. She said there would be lots of writing in her class.

She said nature was not a black and white thing;
it was decidedly grey, and we were to be expected to account for that.

Do the professors sound more the same to you than they are different?

Or do they sound more different than they are the same?

Given that constraints of the mode in which you're encountering them, they are clearly similar.

But what of the political opposition?
What of the opposing notions of institutional appropriacy?
What of the completely unrelated motives behind the utilization of the ArtScience?

I definitly like the preggo lefty more than the statusquo white man, based on your description. I love and appreciate all of my radically left professors and am glad that they are there to challenge the institution and the thinking of thier students as much as possible. It's interesting that the academy has become a sort of refuge for radical thinkers, somewhere that we can persue our thinking and disseminate what is shut out of every other forum.

I think it might be because burning books has become impossible.

Now that information travels faster than fire the flames just imprint their words in the sky for all to read.

God bless the transistor and the lightbulb.
