Ammo / gun question
    #8881216 - 09/05/08 08:47 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Does anybody know if it is possible to load a 380 auto round into a 38 semi-auto revolver?  If so, would the casing eject properly or would it remain 'stuck' in the pistol?

You need to buy moon clips, or half moon clips to use an auto round in a revolver.

I don't know anything else about firing rimless ammunition in a revolver though, or whether you can use .380 or 9mm in a .38 revolver:shrug:

Mateba Model 6 Unica?

For some sort of experiment, a .380 could probably be shot out of a .38 pistol. If you're lucky bulged cases will be the worst thing that would happen. Not so lucky would be a ruptured case spraying hot brass into your face.

A .380 can be shot out of a 9mm but not the other way around.

Also, you'd only get one shot because it would fail to extract the casing.

It's useful in an emergency.

I'm just saying it's a serious over complication for a simple device

the only problems I'd see is the length and the rim, the
moon clips would fix the problem of the rim but the loss
of the half inch in case length could pose a problem with
the bullet entering the barrel

.380 acp
Bullet diameter .355 in (9.0 mm)
Neck diameter .373 in (9.5 mm)
Base diameter .374 in (9.5 mm)
Rim diameter .374 in (9.5 mm)
Rim thickness .045 in (1.1 mm)
Case length .680 in (17.3 mm)
Overall length .984 in (25.0 mm)

.38 special
Bullet diameter .358 in (9.1 mm)
Neck diameter .379 in (9.6 mm)
Base diameter .379 in (9.6 mm)
Rim diameter .44 in (11 mm)
Rim thickness .058 in (1.5 mm)
Case length 1.155 in (29.3 mm)
Overall length 1.55 in (39 mm)

WRONG WRONG WRONG

9x17 or 380 acp is NOT the same as 9mm parabellum/9x19, and they are ABSOLUTELY NOT interchangable. Do some research before you go telling people to load their gun with the wrong ammunition. The chamber on a 9mm pistol is longer due to the extra 2mm on the case, and even if the cartridge ejected, which it almost certainly wouldn't, the edge of the chamber would scrape enough of the brass jacket or lead off of the rounds to obstruct the barrel over the course of say a magazine or two.

And what do you mean "convenient in an emergency". 9mm can be downloaded to the point where the ballistics would mimic those of a 380, so unless your emergencies stick you in situations where you for some reason have a 9mm pistol an an excess of 380 acp, that makes no sense.
