Was the time to colonize the petri comparable to MEA or PDYA?

Although I suppose you could have just as easily used ME or PDY

Did you use oatmeal powder again? Have you done this with malt extract powder?
edit: oatmeal powder

I'm currently using this mix as per the instructions above (with gentamicin added) to try multispore growth. I'm using P. ostreatus. I picked a poor choice for container though (I used a pint sized jar) as a result of lack of time to pick up something else. I will be doing this again several times with different mixes (eventually) in a better (more visibility) container.
Thanks for the idea- works great so far.

I'll be cooking some up in the next couple hours. I have a 4lb bag of malt extract so I'll be going with that.
As MycoAu said, thanks for the idea!

Obviously, this mix cannot be made into a transparent version for observation while still being OTC and cheap. However, to improve the visibility of the mycelium and potential contaminates, while also encouraging germination of some spores (if that is the purpose it is being used for), be sure to add actvated charcoal to the mixture after being heated to the point of congealing (thickening). The blackish background will cause everything to stand out and is much more aesthetically pleasing.
BTW, gentamicin/cornstarch/oatmeal mix worked fine for germination of some P. ostreatus. Growing out just fine. Only problem I've seen so far is that it is drying out and pulling away from the sides of the jars I have it in. I'm sure this is only because I've got tyvek over it (too much air exhange is allowing faster evaporation). Petris probably won't have this problem, but I don't have any glass petris at the moment.

Actually I'm glad you mentioned that bit about adding activated charcoal. After I poured my plates I realized it was going to be a little difficult to see growth. I was thinking along the lines of adding food coloring but activated charcoal is a much better solution!
It helps a lot when someone points out the obvious.

Visibility issues? Tell me about it. How do you think I remembered the charcoal thing. White P. ostreatus mycelium doesn't show for at least a day (if not more)after germination. I remembered somebody posting some beatiful pics of charcoal agar grow out with mycelium and it was rather stunning. I figured it would work just as well here. Sadly, I don't have any on hand at the moment. Maybe this weekend I'll pick some up and run a second set of jars to see how much better it shows up.
Does anybody else have suggestions for improvements to this (IMHO) very cheap replacement for agar? I would really like to see a group effort on this. It could eliminate some of the fear of using agars amongst the new cultivators because it doesn't matter if you screw up 100 times- it's only costing a few cents and some time!
I keep hearing that people are intimidated by agar - I remember the feeling. If this becomes a standard, at least for a few species, especially cubes, it could foster a lot experimentation.

you can also use just brf mixed to a medium consistency with liquid fruit pectin.i dont know how well it will work with pastuerization, but ive never had any problems when using a p.c..its about 2.50 for the fruit pectin and we all know the price of brf.
