Cordyceps militaris
    #8874705 - 09/03/08 11:58 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

A mushroom that grows on bugs.   Ewwww.

Cordyceps militaris

Macro shot:

This little bugger (pardon the pun) was found on the forest floor over Labor Day weekend.  The wasp or whatever it was didn't come out of the ground whole though even though an attempt was made.

I object to Kuo's characterization of "flaky-New-Age pharmacological uses for Cordyceps extracts can be found."

Evidently, he hasn't had a good Reiki massage while practicing his Feng Shui.  Most of my identification work comes from my Eight Ball and lucky mood ring.

Are you sure on the ID?

Here's a C militaris Mrs Rabbit and I found and excavated last year.  You should be able to dig them out carefully and keep the insect host intact.

I'm fairly certain.  The length can be as short as 2 cm or as long as 8 cm.  Can you think of another species it might be?

Are you sure about yours?  I don't see the pimply bumps on yours.  They are readily apparent in other photographs I have seen, including Kuo's.

Senor, you have a different Cordyceps species.  RR has C. militaris.

Did you dig up the bug?

Of course.

I'm sticking to my guns on this until another name can be given for mine. His lacks the pimples that are described in the literature and mine have them.

What makes you think mine is different?

They both have pimples, his pictures don't have quite enough resolution to see them well.

Different shape of the fruiting body.  Militaris fruits in more of a straight thin line while yours is expanded and looks more like cotton candy.
