Yeah, looking at those pictures definitely makes me want to quit the occasional cigarette.
But what's the actual statistics on this? For instance, at what rate does smoking cigarettes increase one's likelihood of getting cancer? Does a cig a day for four years while below the age of thirty dramatically increase your chances, or will your lungs heal after?

I've smoked 1/2 a pack a day more or less for at least 12 years now.
I can honestly say I don't get all that winded shit people get, nor have i ever got a smokers cough,or anything for that matter.
Surely my lungs are fucked, but Can't say I feel anything negative.
That always pops into my head when i hear people trying to quit.
I'm gonna go smoke a cigarette.

Smoking is completely retarded everyone that's ever started smoking did so when it tasted like shit and more or less thought it made then look cool.

Not true... some people have a gene that makes them predisposed to enjoying that first puff on a cigarette. I know the first time I smoked a Lucky Strike, I got a powerful wave of euphoria.
I'm currently going on a week-long break from 'em, though, just to test my willpower.

Nofi, but that's fucking lame. If you want to test your willpower, quit for good. I quit for a week lots of times, there's no difficulty in that. Now giving it up for always and ever, that's a different story. But doable still.

And yeah, actually, I'd disagree that quitting permanently is a better test of willpower. I think it's far harder to stay a social smoker (i.e. someone who only smokes one cig a day, and then infrequently throughout the week) than someone who permanently abstains out of habit.

Yeah, you got a point there, being a social smoker and nothing more takes more willpower. Unless you live in a bar.

I have never felt anything from smoking a cigarette. I will smoke a clove every now and then, but thats just for the taste. I have smoked in the past, but i quit cold turkey and never felt shitty. I have tried to quit drinking caffeine on the other hand, and i get the shivers, feel sick, and crave a Pepsi until i give in. I can't quit drinking the stuff, or i can't function.

I've never really understood why people smoke cigarettes when they don't get a buzz off them. I mean, seriously, if you're trying to look cool, go for some classy aviator shades and a James Dean pose--but why pick up smoking if you're not getting anything from it?

People smoke in large part due to "psychological" cravings. It's similar to biting your nails and other types of compulsive habits.

But that's only after you've started smoking and gotten addicted to it, though. I can understand an oral fixation, but what made you pick up smoking in the first place?

Good question. A lot of people do it out of peer pressure, and other perceived social benefits.
Look at nearly any scientific study, in general, people do not lihe the feel or the effects of nicotine. Smoking is an interesting curiosity.

I smoked for 6 years, quit about a month ago. Here are some facts to help you along the way:
Courtesy of HealthBolt.net
This is what you can expect if you quit smoking right now:
* In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal. * In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal. * In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level. * In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase. * In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks. * In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%. * In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half. * In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker. * In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker. * In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

It's weird even seeing pictures of me holding cigarettes now. You just have to try to find something to occupy you when those cravings hit. I know how easy it is to drive by a gas station and stop because you "only want one". But then you have a whole pack. And that pack ain't gonna smoke itself right? I gave my last pack away and just fought it. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement
I'm smoking so few right now that the taste is disgusting and my sense of smell/taste are returning. I can smell it now on my clothes and in my car and it makes me want to :vomit:
Whenever I have one I just tell myself how disgusting it is, that my mouth wouldn't taste like shit if I didn't have one, that my fingers wouldn't smell/stain from holding it, etc. and that's worked fairly well.
^ Maybe this can help you, Alicedee25.

Lolwut. Nicotine is not only more addictive than THC, but it's legal and commercially available practically everywhere, making the addiction a lot harder to quit than with weed--where all one has to do is distance yourself from your black market connections.

Yeah, I think he was a little sarcastic. But nonetheless, nicotine addiction was on level with painkillers for me. Painkillers were terrible and I didn't even abuse them.

Yeah, shit ain't easy at all. I was up to well over a pack a day at one point and it took a shitload of patches and at least 3 or 4 good "serious" tries. I put serious in quotes because essentially the only truly serious try was the one that worked. You really gotta commit to that shit though. Personally, I don't think becoming a social smoker would have worked for me at that point.
Basically, if you're young enough that you haven't already been doing it for decades it pretty much boils down to a decision of "Do I really want to be this substance's bitch?" Unfortunately, for some people like my folks, it's not even a question of that anymore. I wouldn't want to imagine what it would be like if you've been doing it for 30/40 years. That's why I feel like a dick for pushing the issue with my dad. But it almost seems like they think they're doing themselves a service by cutting their lives shorter. My thing is just, hey, I've probably already cut a good 20 years off my life and that was just doing fun stuff.
But I'm at a good point with the cigs now I think. Coming up on 5 years since I quit and I just recently took 2 pulls off somebody elses for the first time. I was just rolling and it seemed like a thing to do so fuck it, right? My best advice that I can offer is just NO HALF STEPPIN!! If you half step with this shit your a fuckin' massochist motherfucker. It's either today or don't bother. If you're gonna quit tomorrow you're not ready yet.
I actually had somebody recently ask me why I quit. Serious as all hell too. I found that a little strange. It's like, huh?, why did I quit?, shit I don't know, you gonna be here for a while?

The thing about them patches too is that everybody seems to want to bitch about how expensive they are.
But if it works? Derrr...
Shit, I rememeber when packs were 2 and some change. Now you might be paying 7 bucks for 1 pack. Shit is fuckin' disgusting anymore.
Ya'll have better shit to spend your money on. I know you do.

Oh yeah definitely. It's nice to grab a case of beer and not have to buy a $4 pack of cigarettes on top. When we toured out west and places like New York the packs were in excess of $7. Especially in Manhattan and shit.
