Hi everybody.
Lately, while walking in my woods, I came across an abundance of mushrooms. They grow alongside a maintenence road for a cell phone tower. Unfortunately, I can't post any pictures of them. Sorry. I'll do the best I can.
The gills look similar to Pan Subb gills. The spore print is jet black. The caps range from 1-3.5 inches in diameter, 3.5 being the more mature specimens. Younger specimens have a veil. The cap color is tannish-brown. The stem is thick, and hollow. There is no sign of bruising. I'm hoping these are something active. There are alot of them, and some of the specimens get pretty big. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks alot for any help you can provide. I appreciate it!

Do they have really thick beefy stems(thicker than pan subbs?) and a velvety texture?

I hedge my bets on mica caps or something similar...they pop up like crazy when they pop up...they should be growing out of buried wood or wood stumps.
Non active

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together. St Thomas

Gumby knows, he knows Its hard to say without a pic, but the description sounds like Psathrella velutina/velvety psathrella.
