Terrarium Material Might Kill' Em
    #887327 - 09/17/02 04:28 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I built a terrarium out of plexiglass about 4 months ago an I did not have the best results with it. I used Marine goop, a very strong adhesive, to stick to plexiglass panels together, forming a kind of aquarium. I also used kitchen tub & tile acrylic sylicone to seal the inside edges.

At first I attributed the results to humidity , but now Ive stumbled ont something else. As I was buying more sylicone caulk for another project I realized this thing is treated with fungicide to prevent molds and bacteria from growing on it.

My question for anybody out there is this. Do you thinkthat fungicide can actually permiate the air inside the terrarium or do you thinkit only prevents moilds to grow ON it?
Any comments and opinions will be greatly appreciated.

There is a special silicone sealent, made for fish tanks, which is non toXic. Give that a whirl.
The fumes given off by some solvents may have negative effects

Good luck

i use food grade silicon which has fungicides in it. i prefer it when connecting filter disks to jars since i know it wont grow up onto the disk and suck contams in from outside. i have no probs with it at all.

If you used plexiglass and a solvent, you made what is known as a solvent weld, and the silicon(e) was unnecessary.
If you can avoid the silocon(e), you are better off (you will often find bumps and groves where bacteria can deveope plaque.
You might find it easier to simply purchase a large rubbermaid container (5-7$), and add a small plexiglass window to that.
