Another post of picture perfect porcini (and more)
    #8851695 - 08/30/08 10:19 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

made it up to the porcini spot again yesterday to check things out, it looks to have gotten another nice rain, then some more last night and probably more on the way...  it was real cool and windy up around 6000' where the boletes were, another cold snap was blowing in, snow level coming down around 5000' on the west slopes of the central cascades tonight , though not much is expected to fall, if any.  it's turning out to be a pretty great mushroom season and it's not even september yet  .  I have several bags of dried kings from the last haul so I left almost everything I saw, it was hard to do, but I dunno what I'd do with them all, heh...

also hit the chant patch on the way and picked a few dozen nice firm buttons, probably a little over a pound or so, pins popping up everywhere

cam was low on juice and I got a late start so I was in a bit of a hurry, didn't take much but mushroom shots, but I did get a pretty nifty shot of a little frog I found in a puddle...

Boletus edulis

Cantharellus formosus

Amanita buttons

coral fungi

Cortinarius sp.

It looks like some Hydnum calvatus got parasitized by Hypomyces or something.  spines were replaced with small pores and they had a very unmushroomy smell.  almost floral/perfumey, pretty interesting...

Cortinarius violaceus, damn these were purple

Slippery jacks are starting to pop up all over, I'd try them if there weren't so many kings

Not sure what these are, just thought it made a nice pic

Very nice!  I believe those "Hydnums" are in fact Albatrellus confluens or something similar.  I often mistake them for hedgehogs at a distance.

Looks like you're doing quite well, and I hope you continue to do so!

hrmm, interesting...  they could be those I guess.  they did look very similar to the Hydnums I found in the same habitat as well, which is why I was thinking they were parasitized ones...

the odor was similar to the hydnums and definitely distinctive, they didn't smell like mushrooms.  I'll give em a better look if I make it up again any time soon, thanks for the help  .

I make a vow right here and now: if I am ever to have a prolonged stay in the US, it will be in the PNW. Man, such diversity, quantity and brilliant quality of mushrooms out there! Those pics really make me jealous, spores!
