My best shot at growing-first time, first try! * 1

Ok my first attempt at growing shrooms.
I did read the FAQs and did it to the best of my ability
im new at that so its possible I may mess up but we all
learn from our mistakes, so here goes nothing. I used the
following:

28 ounce bag of brown rice, finished 2/3 of that bag.
1/2 pint plastic container with snap on lid. cylindar
shape with 1-1 height/width ratio.
approximately 1 pint plastic jar which deformed
and shrank to an approximate volume of 12 ounces
when I poured boiling water in it to sterilize it.
46 ounce glass pickle jar, poured boiling water
and the steam sterilized the upper parts. I also
shook the jar to splash the water as to ensure an even
sterilization. the 1/2 pint plastic container, I
simply held it directly over the steam that was raising
from the skimmering pan of brown rice. The steam should
take care of all bacteria.

next I closed the lids rather tightly after
adding 1/3 vermiculite(looks like potting soil)
and filled them with rice.

46 ounce jar-1/3 verm on bottom, 1/3 rice in middle layer
and the top layer clear. doesnt mycellum need air to breath?
16(12) ounce jar-1/3 verm, 1/2 rice, 1/6 air
same for the 8 ounce container. I know I need to let them
cool for 18-24 hours before adding the spores.
Ill have to open the lids for 15 seconds. will this
cause any problems? I wont change jars this time. Ill try to
get better jars next time, but for now ill have to see
how successful I am. anything I can do besides change jars to
improve my chances?

Wishfull thinking... this is NOT the way it?s supposed to be done. Holding anyting into steam for a few seconds won?t do shit.

Vermiculite doesn?t look anything like potting soil. Are you sure you got vermiculite?

You mean, after you filled it with rice you didn?t sterilize the jars anymore??

Man, sorry to tell you this, but this attemt will fail almost 100%.
It?s a very bad idea to experiemt on ones first try.

Follow the PF tek to the letter and DON`T experiment on your first attempt ! !

This sounds like my first attempt.  I think you could follow the TEKs a little better.  When I tried to improvise it turned out horrible!  Take the time to sterilize, if you dont you have a (almost) zero percent chance of success with this growing method.  Better luck next time! :blush:

I would stick to grinding your own flour and don't worry about those little chuncks of rice they will help.

To improve your chances, use the PF Tek and quit taking shortcuts. They will lead to nothing but contams unless you know what you are doing, and from the looks of it you have absolutely no clue. Read and know the PF Tek like the back of your hand. It isn't complicated. It isn't difficult. It is almost foolproof. Its cheap. Its easy. Why aren't you using it?

If I put it directly in boiling water the jar melted! I put the glass jar in boiling water and no problem, but the plastic jar kinda melted! I thought bacteria was very senestive to heat?

she said its as good, if not better than verm. she also said it holds water very
well. isnt that the whole purpose?

The rice and verm were already sterilized. first I poured boiling water into jar then I added verm into the boiling water which killed the bacteria and spores. then I added cooked brown rice to that. I made sure to sterilize the lid too.

I agree with you but the glass jar was too big to put in pot and
I only had smaller jars in plastic. My dad thinks its a waste of money to buy
empty jars, so hes giving me the jars after the food contents in it are finished.
the 46 ounce jar used to contain pickles. theres also some 10 ounce tall jars with olives in them that ill use. these are made of glass.

Man, pouring boiling water over somthing doesn't sterilize it, you need to expose it to boiling temps for a prolonged period of time. A dozen 1/2 canning jars cost like $5 at walmart, its not a waste of money, and once you buy a dozen, you can use them over and over. This is the time for you to experience, not experiment.

I went to walmart they didnt have canning jars, just these 1/2 pint plastic containers

If you go to walmart and ask somebody with a blue vest on, and they still don't have them, then get 12oz. (or whatever size) drinking glasses, key word GLASS, you need glass so you can properly sterilize your substrate by boiling or PCing. If you do use glasses, do a search and see how people have used glasses. Good luck, you'll need it.

They only had plastic drinking cups. sucks eh? however I have two glass candle jars that appear to be 1/2 pint, except they have no lid. will placing heavy tape over the top do?

air holes? I just leave 1/3 of the top empty as an air chamber. bacteria can easily enter the verm and travel thru the spaces in the verm. also if I put verm on the top how will I inserminate the jars? the rice on top so I can drop spores onto the rice and not the verm?

I cooked the rice 10 min, no way can they survive.

Son, what in the hell are you talking about. Alright, enough of this.

1) there is NO, NO, I repeat NO way that Walmart wouldn't have had canning jars OR glass drinking glasses, I say bullshit to you, thats impossible.

As far as bacteria being able to work its way through the verm, well I agree that there is an off chance that you may have a contam or two get into your jars, but since verm has no nutrients, it would be much harder for it to reach your substrate.

What exactly does "inserminate the jars" mean, if you meant innoculate, its easier to do this with a syringe.

Serious before you waste anymore money on brf, plastic cups, and whatever the hell else you are throwing in there, you really should read a whole lot more. I'm not trying to be a dick, but you're just wasting your time. Good reading and good luck.

I looked all over. maybe they were out of stock? I even asked and he couldnt find any. guess ill buy some from ebay or in the trades forum. they had glass drinking glass, but these have no lids and cost like $5 each. the plastic ones are 50 cents each. I have drinking glasses at home anyway.

You are trying to say that glasses cost $5 each, those are mighty nice glasses. If you can't find jars at walmart, try a grocery store. And as for the glasses not having lids, you use aluminum foil (I think, but use the search to be sure).

A contamination spore does not act like water, it falls and then tries to spread from there, much like your mushroom spores.

Huh? Verm on your needle will not harm your project, just flame and rub with alcohol between jars. Like I said, I think it would be in your best intrest to read a whole shitload more before you procede.

try any grocery store, I know that definitely carry it, I bought 12 jars for about $7. It comes in a case.

BAM! 1 dozen 1/2 pint Ball canning jars with tapred edges $5.16. Order them. Use them. Love them.

Where in the world do you live that you cannot get canning jars and vermiculite? Anyway, there is no way Walmart would not have jars, or at least drinking glasses. They wouldn't be out of all of their glasses. As everyone has said before, what you are doing will not work. It will fail. It will contaminate. And why can't you break the jars? It isn't like they are sacred Chinese urns or anything. Besides, how do you expect to get your cake out? Anyway, if you are having trouble finding these things in the store, b/c maybe you live out in bumfuck North Dakota(which would probably explain a lot) all of the supplies you would want are available online if you do some searching of your own.

You know dude I really wonder about you. Not to flame you like I usually do, but you sure seem to have a proficient deficiency in common sense. Maybe mycology isn't for you. Maybe say coloring books are a hobby that is a little more up to your speed.

Last suggestion:
- Get JARS or DRINKING GLASSES
- READ, UNDERSTAND and LEARN to USE the PF-tek ( www.fanaticus.com )
- READ http://www.fungifun.org/pf/pf_en.htm
- USE either one, or a combination of the above teks
- BE SUCCESSFULL, and DON?T try experimenting on your first try
- Read the FAQ ( www.shroomery.org/faq/ ) ! !

wow thanks for the link! very informative! I saw pics of verm, it looks like crushed stone, not soil like. Guess that lady was wrong. I asked her for verm and she said this is as good as verm in holding water.


as for jars, I now got the idea. you slide the cake out of the jar without breaking the jar, unless it wont slide out.

can cooked but uncrushed rice be used?
