No, this is not another crackpot theory.
Source of Free Electricity
Im just curious how legal it is, and how the phone company could tell if your using the power?
Might come in handy for hurricane season.

It's the amps that get ya
There is only about 20-50mA of current on a phone line (20mA in North America, I think)...so about the only thing you could power is an LED lamp, such as the one he shows using.

Of course, else you would see a lot more cautions on phone lines.
I was thinking along the lines of a weather radio, led lamps, other low amp uses.
A few times ive run out of batteries and really low on gas, post hurricane.
Not like your going to be able to run a TV of your phone line, tho it would be kinda neat.

thats awesome, iv been an electrician for a few years now and never thought of powering leds like that.
Another free source of power is to take a bat (wood) to your electrical meter, then jump the connection with a flattened copper pipe. Dont be stickin your dink in there now.

I know an appraiser who went to a house, and saw a guy had removed the covering and insulation from the main power line to his house on both sides of the electricity meter. He then used jumper cables to short the meter andapparently was getting away with it.
The appraiser told him he needed to remove that if he wanted to sell the house, and not kill his kids that were running around the yard.

That would take some balls (and a whole lot of stupid) to do that on a live line.
How did the meter reader not see that?

I thought the same thing... hmmm... zero power usage again. Kinda odd.

The problem is that if you bypass the meter, it no longer moves, thus it appears that you are not using any power. When the utility guy comes to read the meter, and it hasn't moved, you get busted.

Maybe he was just supplementing his normal power supply, not replacing it.

That's what gets people busted... They start off small with a single 1K, then grow to the point where they have to steal the power.
Never a smart move, IMO.

Yeah there's a lot of techniques floating around like this one, which are a little more subtle and do apparently work:
However, while I don't have a cite, I distinctly remember reading about someone getting busted using that technique to hide their grow op. The power company does monitor their grid and if there's unusual usage which isn't accounted for, they will investigate.
If I were planning a grow op, I'd just do everything I could do reduce my own personal power consumption (CFLs in all fixtures, aggressive power saving on all PCs, LCD TV, ditch the AC, etc.) and then use something like this for the plants. Seems much less likely to arouse suspicion.
Anyway, sorry, got a little off-topic there. But yeah, I bet someone could start a successful niche business selling low power devices (lamps, radios, etc.) which run off the phone line.
