If you hold the rights to stop them from doing that normally, then you retain that right now.
Isn't that what the thing says?

Not if you transfer that right or grant it to another one. Read the terms of contention above.
Yes you own the copyright, but you give up the right to exclusive use and duplication, so you might as well not own the copyright. While you can still sell your work, as you own it, you cannot stopgoogle from using it or distributing it.
You were giving google the right to do whatever they want. You upload your new book, now google can distribute it as it likes. You upload your new photography set you were selling at a gallery, google can post it for free on its site.
Sucks not to mention the problems with privledged information. You write something to your lawyer/priest/accountant and google gets to post it online or sell it in pamphlets.

I'm a little confused. Did they not take all of that language out?
Isn't that the whole point of this blurb I posted, that they removed all of those things and replaced it with that one sentence?

It sounds like that was the point, but I also don't know if they took it out.
What I was saying is I read the terms before yesterday and the "you retain your copyright" was allready present. So all I was saying was that that wasn't a replacement. Now whether they ommited something or made the change earlier and people didn't catch it till now I don't know.
Edit: Just checked and apparently they removed everything except that section you posted.
So they did fix it.
Google really stopped a cascade of disgruntled nerds with this one
I'm impressed. It seems most companies wouldn't have acted so quickly to fix the PR problem. People joke about taking over the world allready, and their growing so big they should be careful they don't get the public perception of microsoft or something.
So good they took that out

They could have avoided the whole situation by not screwing up in the first place, but, yeah - I pretty much figured it was a screw up. I mean, what are they doing - sending all my outgoing traffic to some Google Central Intelligence Server or something?
Anyway, I like Chrome, but it's missing add-ons, and I'm really addicted to Firefox's search-by-typing setting.

technically they copy a shitload of copyrighted works as is, with their whole web page caching and everything. They have even been sued over it once or twice...of course, they did not lose though, since it is simple to put a metadata tag in to tell the crawler not to index your page.
