It may do more, but at a minimum I know it tells where the tracks start and stop.
edit: it also holds information for the sector size iirc. Not sure if it does much else. Take a look and post one if you want, we can break it down. They're just ascii data, you can open em with any text viewer.

...that's what I thought. So I have an mp3 player that insists on playing track changes even when there is not suppose to be any gaps. I mean like if you remove the gaps you can still hear a split second change to the next track. It's really fucking annoying when I'm listening to a seemless Dead set and you hear the change or a dnb mix, the same thing.
Is this an issue with the player or does it have something to do with the cue, or lack there of?

It's probably an issue with the player - it has to pre-buffer the next track to get true gapless playback, and many players don't.

This is a flash player, will the disk players be more likely to buffer?

cue files are for burning cd's usually (u have to decode to wave first, then edit the cue file to match your file directory). m3u's are generally used for a playlist. the gap u are getting is because u are listening to mp3 and your player is putting it there. mp3 does not encode gaps, however flac does.

No. Most people don't listen to gapless mixes so the player manufacturers ignore us. You can install custom firmware like Rockbox however. Look it up, you might like it (I didn't).

...damn it, doesn't it piss you off!! What about the new car receivers, if you stick a flash drive in them, will they play any differently? I love the idea of filling up a large flash drive and never having to worry about cd's again, but it seems like that's the only way to hear seemless music the way it was intended.

No, the other way is to use a program like mp3directcut (google it, it's free) and combine the MP3 files into one large one. You lose the ability to skip tracks but you gain absolutely gapless playback.

I use CD's in my car head unit and they play gapless.
Any decent headunit should have an option to play gapless or not.
I only have gaps when I'm going from one directory to the next while the data is read. If you just let it play you can listen for hours with no gap if you keep all the tracks on the same directory. Usually these are just live sets that are an hour to an hour and a half long though, so just put them in different directories, presuming they are broken into multiple tracks, and you'll find your stuff easy and have no issues with gaps inbetween tracks if its live or something really long.

Yeah, I know cd's will play gapless but I'm trying to get away from cd's all together. And when it comes to the Dead all listen to is .flac so there presents another problem, how do I merge a .flac. Johnm, what media are you refering to that plays gapless, a cd with mp3 directories?

yeah, I just burn them to mp3 and on a disc and listen that way.
Good for hours. and the directories help with organization.
