rapid colonization
    #8854980 - 08/31/08 02:17 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

im using the PF tek and this is the first time i've attempted cultivation. a week ago i inoculated 8 jars. i effed up the sterilization and immersed 7 of the jars n the water. this resulted in very wet cakes. the eighth is colonizing well. yesterday i cleaned the 7 out, filled them w/ rye cake, sterilized them let them cool for 9 hours and then inoculated them. now, less than 24 hours later theyre already starting to colonize w/ white fuzz. the directions say it takes 4-7 days for this to happen. is this possible or are my jars contaminated?

24 hr is to fast. Do you have a p.c? or did you try and clean the rye in a normal pot?

without a PC, it's very unlikely you were able to sterilize rye correctly.

without a picture, we won't know if it's myc or another contaminate.

well, i got them from earth's tongue. anybody use them? how good are they?

i believe the jar that survived the first batch is good. that took about 4 days to start colonizing visibly.

and, no i don't have a p.c. is rye that hard to sterilize?

its only colonizing at the inoculation sites. i torched the needle and used 91% alcohol on my hands and the lid of the jar.

can anybody post a really good pic of the mycelium i should be looking for?
unfortunately, i have no way to post a pic of what i have.

is BRF that much easier to sterlize?

its rye flour!

well the reason i say that it is probably contamed is because it takes a pressure cooker to kill the endospores and stuff lurking in the jars.

you may have gotten the mold spores killed but if the endospores survived then there's a good chance in a few days your jars are guna be smelling sweet and it'll be time to throw em out.

wash them w/ regular dish soap?

also, when i ifinally get mycelium growing, birth the cakes, put them in the terrarium, etc. what factor does light have in the process? do mushrooms need alot of light? i was under the impression they don't, since mushrooms grow in dark caves and such. do i need a clear terrarium? i plan on using a plastic tote.

You really need to just stop what you're doing and begin reading about the process.

search pftek and follow it to a T

first, i'd like to thank all of you for the encouragement.
i decided to let these jars continue to grow despite all the naysayers.
they're fruiting well. they started colonizing fast but then they slowed way down until they were fully colonized and pinning about 2 weeks ago. my brother and i berthed them and they are doing well in a 10 gallon fishtank. can't wait to eat them. it will truly be an experience. to reap the fruit of my labors and a big slap in the face of some of you people. so, maybe i did have super spores. all mold, huh? stop and read the process? you guys may want to check out earthstongue.com for your spores.

For growth to happen that fast you must have had a liquid culture or something as spores do need 48h aprox and there is no way around that.

Also, maybe you had mold growing but the mycelium that grew afterwards killed it off.

In any case you got shrooms out of it which comes to show how resistant mycelium can actually be.

I was reading that Removed website earlier - and they make alot of pretty strong claims about their spores/syringes.. Speculative propaganda? Who knows..

Non-vendor link removed.  Please don't link to non-vendors.  That's a long standing policy here.

I think you were using rye flour instead of BRF.  Get some pics, the proof is in the pic, otherwise you sound too cocky to be spoutin off with no backup.  I have seen the beginnings of small myc growth in 24 hours but nothing to write home about.  It can happen.  Now let's see it.  Without pics, you aren't doing ET any favors here either FYI.

yes, i'm ignorant because i'm just starting. but, i'm not stupid and don't need to be treated like an asshole BY assholes.

so, in conclusion, thanks to those who are trying to be helpful and kick rocks to all the asshats.

congrats on a successful first grow. if you're going to continue working with rye, especially if you go to rye grain, you WILL need a pressure cooker, no ifs ands or buts about it.

i don't have a way to put pics on my comp so you'll just have to take my word...or not.

i DO plan on investing in a pressure cooker because (for whatever reason) i think rye is a much better substrate. i'm going to try an outdoor patch next year in the spring using rye berries just for shits and giggles. what type is best suited for my climate? i live in michigan where the winters get pretty damn cold.
