Change of style?
    #885143 - 09/16/02 08:41 AM (19 years, 8 days ago)

As a moderator of this forum I wish to do my best to serve you as anyone with authority of any type is truly more a servant than a master. As this topic does have spiritual ramifications I am asking the regulars here if they think I should post less or kid around less. I do not want people coming here and getting the wrong idea of this forum or the Shroomery because of my actions.

Let me know what you think. It is important to me.

Cheers,

We elected you because we like your style. Don't change a thing.

I dont post to this forum often but I do check in daily, so here is my two cents:
First of all congrats to you! And having read many of your posts I have never found you to be offensive in any way, or unkind to anyone. I think that those are among the most important qualities for a Mod. I myself have had experience (once) with a mod. who acted in a very unprofessional and rude manner when answering a post I made. I pride myself on trying to treat people with respect while still having fun and I think you act in much the same way.

Good Luck

i think we should remain ourselves... i don't see the point in posting less, or posting different just because we are mods...
we have always tried to be respectful to people, even if they don't deserve it... and if it wouldn't have been that way i doubt we would have been "elected"  the only thing i certainly am going to change is that im going to spend more time here...

I didn't foresee the possibility of a -1 + -1 + 0(?). I just hope it doesn't get out of hand... like the fat kid on the seesaw. I have neither the time nor the energy to waste on a balancing act...

Obscure enough?

hehehehehe... i love you too, sclorch...
anyways the belief of a moderator will make no difference... i will merely continue stating my opinion on things as i did before beeing a mod... we are not here to control the contents of the discussion, as long as it is spiritual and philosophical... we are here to watch out for offensive and attacking threads and posts, so that everybody can feel free to express his thoughts/feelings without beeing flamed...
my question to you is: why do you put it like this (-1) + (-1) + (0) and not (+1) + (+1) + (0)? ah well... it's all a matter of perspective... or are you afraid believers might take over the world?

Sclorch it's never obscure enough for me, but I like it.

Hey, how about:

Premise (C): the probability P(g_i) of the i^th gene g_i existing and functioning correctly in a breeding cohort is independent of all other P(g_j) with j not equal to i. P(g_i) is proportional to the probability of the mutation that gives rise to g_i. And remember, it is critical to a non-design theory of speciation that mutations are random, i.e. not correlated with each other.

Deduction (1): if (A), (B) and (C), then the probability distribution of intelligence P(IQ) should be, a priori, an exponentially decreasing curve, i.e. P(IQ) = a exp(-b IQ), where a and b are constants.  Because, roughly, the probability for a given level of intelligence IQ caused by N functioning intelligence genes is P(IQ) = [P(g_i)]^N = exp(- N (-log P(g_i))), where we have assumed all P(g_i) are the same for the sake of simplicity. [(P(g) < 1, incidentally, so -log P(g) > 0.] We can fancy this up by letting P(g_i) vary from gene to gene, but the outcome is essentially unchanged.

After all, vaporbrains said to drop some science stuff in here.

Do you then believe that chimpanzees have the same potential intelligence as a human? The difference between them and us is the genes.

Sclorch: I don't think genes dictate intelligence.
ToxicMan: Do you then believe that chimpanzees have the same potential intelligence as a human? The difference between them and us is the genes.

I didn't notice that my statement was so ambiguous.
Let me restate it.

The morphological characteristics dictated by genes (within a species) do not vary enough (except in extreme cases i.e. birth defects) to affect the brain's overall structure and function. IMHO, I would say 90-95% (maybe more) of our "intelligence" is dictated by nurture... the rest due to morphology (genes). With those figures- based solely on my knowledge of the brain and cognitive science (my forte)- I don't think genes play that significant of a role in determining someone's intelligence. Furthermore, there are MANY ways (lots of studies available on this subject) one can increase their IQ (standard test of "intelligence"... though I think disposition and "common sense" {whatever that is} should be included). This only strengthens my point that genes (for the most part) don't dictate intelligence.

I'm done thinking about it.

Too egalitarian for me.

I'm firmly ensconced in nature.

Think about this:
Some people cannot change.

Or are you saying that a moron with no organic brain dysfunction can become the next Einstein?

But that is not to say that isn't some room for improvement. I see it as a blend with nature setting the limits for the nuture aspect. Nurture is bounded.

Cheers,

*Heaves a HUGE sigh*

Where are you going, my brother? Or should I not ask? We knew each other barely, and yet, I feel diminished without you. I am honored more than you know that you stopped in to say your goodbye to me specifically in my thread. A thread that brought me much joy, until now.

Goodbye my Brother wherever you are going.

Thank you for the lessons you taught me.

Thank you for taking the time to post.

Thank you for your understanding.

Thank you for being you.

I never told you, but I loved you.

Go in peace.
