War simulation
    #884641 - 09/16/02 02:15 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Last summer, the armed forces staged some war games. The scenario was that of an attack on Iraq. In the games, which involved 13,000 troops and a vast computer simulation, Paul Van Riper played the role of Saddam Hussein.

?In the first few days of the exercise, using surprise and unorthodox tactics, the wily 64-year-old Vietnam veteran sank most of the US expeditionary fleet in the Persian Gulf, bringing the US assault to a halt.? The Pentagon, which apparently likes its tests well-rigged to produce pleasurable results, decided this wouldn?t do. So they ?unsunk? the naval fleet that Van Riper?s tactics destroyed, and brought back to life the thousands of American casualties. They then instructed Van Riper?s people to disregard a large amphibious landing, and then, and only then, were the ?Americans? able to defeat ?Saddam.?

This news will come as a great relief to those who see war as some kind of a "Marquis of Queensbury rules" boxing match. You know, the ones who are always moaning about bombing from 15,000 feet and complaining that one side is less well-equipped than the other.

Looks like the Iraqis stand a fighting chance this time.

Or the U.S. could do the smart thing and just stay the hell out of Iraq to start with.

This is reminiscent of a similar incident in World War 2. The Japanese staged a wargame simulation for their upcoming invasion of Midway. In the simulation their two aircraft carriers were discovered and sunk by the US. The admiral in charge ordered the sunk carriers refloated and the simulation continued. When the Japanese then prevailed in the invasion simulation, the orders to carry out the plan were issued.

When the actual battle occurred, the US actually dicovered and sank the carriers Akagi and Kaga, and the Battle of Midway was won by the US.

About Midway: That's very interesting, I never heard of that!

It's quite sure that the number of casualties on US side will be very high if they launch ground attack. Especially if locals see them as invadors like in Vietnam.

I can't imagine how the Iraqis could percieve us as anything other than invaders. In Kuwait they could flee back to their homes. In Iraq we will be attacking their homes.

What I dread most is that we will end up having to do things like what they did in Chechnya - level an entire city to get rid of the "bad guys". I can see us doing things that will earn the unending hatred of an entire generation of people. And if you piss enough people off badly enough somebody will eventually find a way to get back at you.

It might be less terrible if I didn't believe that it was all about making a few people a lot of money.

I saw an interview with that guy on TV....

While he was real down to earth and straight foreward everyone else was neither confirming nor denying anything.
It was funny at the end he got frustrated and said. "send me over their to run the Iraqis and I would kick Americas ass".

EXACTIALLY! During the Gulf War the Iraqi troops didn't fight as hard as they could have. If the people of Iraq were serious in preventing a US takeover I have no doubts that they could. And unlike America where high power firearms are stashed in many peoples homes, the Iraqi gov. doesn't trust their people to own firearms. Only the military has weopons. This could change quickly though ...

Pinky, look out of the window. Are there pigs flying? The Iraqi's have about as much "chance" as there is of you making a half-coherent post.

Zero.

Reminds me of Bill Hicks talking about the first gulf war (when Iraq was far, far stronger than it is now) - "wasn't it amazing how the media built it up like iraq could ever possibly, under any stretch of the imagination, ever be a threat to us? People talking in hushed tones about "the elite republican guard..."
