I find these all the time in pine forests..anyone here ever eaten any?  curious about how they taste..they are very cool to look at!!

Cook them up with sum butter and salt/pepper, they are good but ya gotta eat them when they are young. Older specimens dont taste as good, nice find btw i love these.

Yeah I really like the way they look...they look like some kind of chocolate marshmellow desert...i dont know why..but they make me think of chocolate when i see em.

So do i need to eat them before the pore surface turns black?

You can, i eat them all i dont mind that much. But make sure the inside is in good condition, i break the cap sometimes down the middle and look inside it and if there are bugs or rot youll see em.

Well, I came late to the party but, I think they look like that too.  Sometime when you find another fresh one cut it two from top to bottom splitting the cap and stem.  It will bruise orange and then s-l-o-w-l-y turn black.  It is the only mushroom I know that does that.

Found another today..i left it cause the pore surface was kinda mushie in some spots..and didnt turn a very bright orange..so i figure it was too late to eat
