Fresh figs!

I have to say I had no clue what figs had to offer until last week. My friend has a fig tree fruiting and offered me some so of course how could i say no. I didn't have a clue what to do with them but after tasting the first fresh fig I knew it was worth it to take some. I ended up taking about 10-15 figs cutting them in half and laying them face down in a glass pie plate, then I poured about a cup of mildly sweet port over them and then topped off with brown sugar. I preheated the oven to about 400F and baked the figs for 40 minutes. My goal was to have syrup type texture but I had not added quite enough sugar so about midway through I took the pan out and stirred the mixture while topping off with more brown sugar. After cooking it for 40 minutes I used it as a topping on some Breyers vanilla bean ice cream. Truly Orgasmic! Enjoy!

My grandparents lived in southern Alabama and had a fig tree in their yard. They were the best fruit I ever had as a kid. That brings back the nicest summer memories My grandmother would also can them and send them home with us to Kentucky. Fig preserves.... we would just eat them out of the jar. Ambrosia.

Finally saw, and ate my first fresh fig the other day, wow. Of course, it was $8 for a tub of about 15, but considering the super short season, the taste and amazing texture, it would have been worth it. But they seem to be gone already

I don't think I have ever seen fresh figs for sale. Where did you find them? I am going to see if I can find some online.

I tried a fresh fig once and didn't like it...it was mushy and had a vague sweet taste, but that's it. Wasn't impressed.
I'm willing to give them another try though.

Mine was a brown fig. Not that I know the difference between figs, but it was nice. But I can see how the texture thing could get to ya.

Fresh figs are sold where I live at the Farmer's Market and local organic grocers when in season. This is the first year I've ever been really into them, but they are fucking delicious.

I fucking love figs!!!!!!
My grandfather has a fig tree in their backyard... I can't get enough of those things whenever I visit. If given unlimited access to figs, I would eat them nonstop. Sooo fucking good.

I love them dried but I like only the black ones fresh (excellent). Those greener ones taste too close to turpentine! Well in my opinion.
At Fred Meyers they actually sell some fig bread I want to try someday. It's a huge as tart made completely out of figs.

You can grow them in Kentucky, but they are not hardy. Here's an article on overwintering fig trees in colder climates.
