so i guess i was under a misconception, i thought the sim card needed to be in the phone and have a battery source for emergency services to track the phone but i,m hearing that the sim card does not need to be in the phone, so there is some type of gps device in the phone? obviously the answer is to disconnect the battery, anyone have any definitive knowledge about this

I'm not a GSM guy but don't the SIM cards basically carry your info?
You can get your location on CDMA phones. Its part of the 911 service.

Yes, if you take the SIM card out they can no longer identify who you are. If you call 911 without a SIM, it will be an anonymous call, though they could still locate you while you're on the phone.

Never tried it but heard about it. Just like you can pop popcorn kernels with a cell phone.

It's not in the SIM card, it's a function of the cellular network. It's not actually GPS because it doesn't use satellites.

Yes, or high-end Nokias. But these don't allow the emergency services to find your location using GPS; they will still have to use the cellular triangulation method.

ALL cellphones will dial 911 if there is power and signal, and contrary to popular belief they don't really need that long to trace your call to a location.

they can also do it if they are locked. try dialing 911 or 118 on a locked/no sim card phone.
