wrapping agar plates with saran wrap

Just curious if it is okay to completely wrap agar filled petri dishes with saran wrap. I have read from various sources to just wrap the edges. I found it much easier to just take a big piece of saran wrap and wrap it around the whole thing. Is that okay?

It doesn?t matter how you wrap it, if only by the edge or as whole. To me it?s easyer if i wrat i t only by the edge.
As for the wraping material, saran wrap is NOT the best choice, soince it?s water and oxygene IMPERMEABLE.
You should use Polyethylene foil wrap, like Glad Cling Wrap.

Just spring for some parafilm, its worth it and specifically designed for what you are doing. I believe they may make more than one style, gas permiable being one of those. best of luck.

I sometimes use ziplock bagies to seal my plates. It works great, and green and yellow make blue...

Electrical tape is waterproof, so eventually it seems the dishes will run out of oxygen. Have any of you noticed the growth stalling after awhile?
A tip for cutting the price of parafilm in half is to cut it lengthwise before wrapping, so each piece can wrap two dishes. I wrap 1,000 petri dishes that way with each $20 roll of parafilm, which works out to only 2 cents per dish. RR

Now thats what I call thinking! I can live with 2 cents a plate

Glade wrap works grate. it is gas permeable. if you sharpen up your carving knife, you can slice the roll up to make 6, 2" rolls. that should last a while.
edit: i got this tip from Anno.

Electrical tapes seals real well, but it's a pain to remove 'in action'.... is the parafilm easy to remove when you're doing the innocualtions???

yes its very nice and easy to work with, i fold it over and make it stronger and that makes it easier to remove as well
