OTTAWA - Police have arrested and charged 19 people in connection with a suspected drug smuggling operation in eastern Ontario.
The arrests were made Tuesday during 20 raids in Ottawa, nearby Alexandria and at the Akwesasne Mohawk reserve near Cornwall. The suspects face a total of 230 charges, including conspiracy to produce and traffic drugs, possession and money laundering.
More than 60 kilograms of marijuana were seized in the raids along with quantities of cocaine and ecstasy
The investigation, dubbed Project Scarecrow and involving Ottawa police, the RCMP and Ontario Provincial Police, began in April 2007.
Police also arrested and charged nine people in the U.S. who are being held in Syracuse, New York.
