Houston Boletus (edible?)
    #8819524 - 08/24/08 10:20 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Figured these are boletus. They are ALL OVER my part of Houston. Ive seen about 10-15 different yards growing them this morning. So my question is are the edible, I know they are not active. They bruise very blue and Im just finding them around yards

Boletes are often very difficult to ID accurately. First pic look like a xerocomus species, the species in the second pic are probably of the same genus. With boletes (and related genera), it's important to note the bruising reaction of the pores and the taste (spit out!)

they are absolutely all over the place in Houston... trust me, it's not just your part of town.

That said, your best bet is to try to get a good book. I recommend for our area, Texas Mushrooms: A Field Guide. Also, you can attempt to key out the mushrooms using Mushroom Expert's Bolete key.

It's a difficult genus to key out though. I think the ones you have that are more reddish may be a better bet than the yellow looking ones

the white stuff on them is Hypomyces, an infection. Throw those out and try to keep them from touching other mushrooms. Or else. If you see one that is white, or the pores look kinda wrong, you should leave it in the field.

Beautiful selection! For IDing purposes, you'll want to note which stain/bruise (all?) as well as the color and pore-size of the pore surfaces (among other things). You appear to have at least two species there, but it isn't obvious whether the two red-and-yellow species in the first photo are different. Those yellow-and-tan boletes may be worthwhile to explore in more detail; hopes are slim for IDing the red-and-yellow species.

Alright thanks everyone. Took a bike ride around and these things are EVERYWHERE...in literally every other yard, strewn across the sidewalk from weedwhackers, and under lots of bushes.
