land bridge theory bs
    #8816251 -

ok anyone else preferably an indigenous west hemisphereian know that the land bridge theory is bs ? ok it says people came from asia down from Canada thru texas thur mexico and reached south america settling along the way over 20-60000 years but the people who settled early on and spent the most time in one place have the least amount of technology? THEY came from the south thats were the most advanced calender in the world is thats were huge buildings are. current theory states that people 1st came to the south west 14000 years ago so thats half the trip,if this is true the Aztec would of just settled down when becoming the most advanced place in the Americas thats absurd

Why would you assume that the migrants to america would have the same technology as their ancestors in asia?  If that were the case we would all have the same technology right now because we all have common ancestors in africa.

Remember, it took many generations to cross from asia to america.  By the time they got to america, they were probably completely unaware of asia and asian culture.

Plus, american indians do look like they are related to asians more so than other ethnicity.

There is interesting evidence coming to light lately to bolster what you're saying.  There has been much argument over the last decade or so as to the validity of the dates gathered by geologists and archeologists from the Monte Verde site in the far tip of South America.  I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I know these sites have been confirmed to be some of the oldest recorded in the Western Hemisphere and are many thousands of years older than those around Clovis, New Mexico in the United States that were previously thought to be the oldest in the Americas.

That said, we also have archeological and anthropological evidence that supports, if not a direct land-bridge route, certainly a coastal hopping path down the west coast of Canada.  What would have been the coastal surface then is quite far off-shore now, but I remember seeing dates published in geological journals on materials found by deep-sea dredging that supported this theory as well.

The whole thing is very interesting and I think is one certainly one of the most compelling unsolved mysteries of archeology; How exactly did these people get here and spread out across the continent?

I saw a show a little about this. It said that some event occured that wiped out several forms of technology in North America.(excuse the short term memory loss no specifics) Maybe this has something to do with the tech "curve" in the Americas. If not the land bridge than how?

Well, Jared Diamond, author of Guns, Germs, and Steel (good book), argues that it was the paucity of suitably domesticable indigenous plants and animals that accounts for north/south america's slower development. The only "large" animals that south america had for domestication were the alpaca/llama. The conflict between the spanish and incas at cajamarca illustrates this pretty well. Food production=technology and government basically.

Actually, recently they discovered human remains older than any previously found, and they were found in Asia.  I think the theory now is that humans came about somewhere in China.

thus further supporting his theory....

let me rephrase this for you: the asbsence of animals served as a catalyst to spur the development of agricultural technology. in order to survive, the south american people had to shed their nomadic heritage in favor of farming.

around these farms, communities and eventually governments formed.

when cultures don't have to worry about chasing their food anymore, advances in civilizations occur much more quickly.

In addition, as i forgot to mention, geographically speaking, the americas have a generally north-south oriented axis. This retards idea diffusion, because changes in climate are much more drastic traveling north to south or south to north. This makes it difficult to bring newly domesticated plant species quickly over long N/S or S/N distances, as the plants (and animals) brought will have to adapt to new climates along the way. A good example (as diamond argues), is the slow movement of corn from mexico to north america.

Edit: hmmm...maybe that's not the information you're looking for. I haven't heard any argument saying that south americans naturally originated in south america, seeing as that would destroy our theory that man originated in Africa. Perhaps you can elaborate?

If you've managed to come up with a theory so crazy that you can't find anyone here to believe it then you've accomplished quite the feat.

First of all, it's a drawing on a rock. Why should it carry any more significance than the chalk drawings on the sidewalk outside of my house? Just because it is ancient, there is no reason to believe that it contains divine wisdom or any sort of accurate prophecy. That being said, here is my interpretation:

The man on the bottom-left is Spiderman. Spiderman can clearly be seen shooting a straight web upwards and downwards, connecting with the train structure above him. The circle to the right represents the circular web, or the source of Spiderman's power.
The three beings atop the train clearly symbolize Doctor Triangulo, a villain yet to be drawn into existence. I prophesize that Doctor Triangulo will eventually act as the catalyst resulting in the death of Spiderman, and, consequently, the end of the world as we know it.
The jagged line ascending from the train structure represents the staircase which Doctor Triangulo will demand constructed after Spiderman's downfall results in the slavery of the entire human race. The Christian God of the Biblical age will cast lightning bolts and microwave pizzas down on the staircase in a fit of rage, covering the Earth in a sea of processed cheese for a period of forty days and forty nights.

See how easy that was? Now why should their interpretation carry any more credence than mine?

I know you think bad things are going to happen and ancient people must have known about it long beforehand, but come on: do you not see how easy it is to impart your own message on that rock after hundreds of years have passed since its creation? These people pick and choose from thousands of historical situations to create their own meaning, then proclaim it as the intent of their ancestors.
What makes a prophecy of the world wars any more valid than a prophecy of Spiderman?

I always think its kind of funny how people say native americans = innocent, living the right way, and white people = evil self centered assholes.
The Aztecs used to cut the hearts out of living men, women, and children every day to appease the hunger of the sun god.  I'd say thats a little more intense than most things white people do.
Although, I really would like to live the life of my ancestors, and just live like a native of this continent.

Wang S, Lewis CM Jr, Jakobsson M, Ramachandran S, Ray N, et al. (2007) Genetic Variation and Population Structure in Native Americans. PLoS Genetics 3(11): e185.
Quote:
Author Summary

Studies of genetic variation have the potential to provide information about the initial peopling of the Americas and the more recent history of Native American populations. To investigate genetic diversity and population relationships in the Americas, we analyzed genetic variation at 678 genome-wide markers genotyped in 29 Native American populations. Comparing Native Americans to Siberian populations, both genetic diversity and similarity to Siberians decrease with geographic distance from the Bering Strait. The widespread distribution of a particular allele private to the Americas supports a view that much of Native American genetic ancestry may derive from a single wave of migration. The pattern of genetic diversity across populations suggests that coastal routes might have been important during ancient migrations of Native American populations. These and other observations from our study will be useful alongside archaeological, geological, and linguistic data for piecing together a more detailed description of the settlement history of the Americas.

This is a landmark article in paleoanthropology, and the case for a Bering Strait migration is stronger than ever.

At the summit of Big Hill in the Cumberland Mountains in Jackson County, Kentucky, is a layer of carboniferous sandstone. In the 1880's it was crossed by a wagon trail that in time broke up the surface of the rock. When the resulting debris was cleared away, a series of tracks was discovered in this carboniferous layer about 300 million years old. There were imprints of a bear, something resembling a large horse, and two "tracks of a human being, good sized, toes well spread, and very distinctly marked." The prints were examined by Professor J.F.Brown of Berea College, Kentucky.

The American Antiquarian, 7:39, January 1885

A pair of human footprints once graced a slab of limestone on the west back of the Mississippi River at St. Louis. In 1816 or 1817 the slab was quarried from its position and removed by a Mr. George Rappe to the village of Harmony (now New Harmony), Indiana. The prints were 10 1/2 inches long and 4 inches wide at the toes, 6 1/4 inches apart at the heels, and 13 1/2 inches spanning between the toes, reported Henry R. Schoolcraft, "the toes being very much spread, and the foot flattened in a manner that happens to those who have been habituated to go a great length of time without shoes. Notwithstanding this circumstance, the prints are strikingly natural, exhibiting every muscular impression, and the swell of the heels and the toes, with a precision and faithfulness to nature, which I have not been able to copy, with perfect exactness, in the present drawing....

Every appearance will warrant the conclusion that these impressions were made at a time when the rock was soft enough to receive them by pressure, and that the marks and features of the feet are natural and genuine." In the geologic scheme of things, this limestone hardened about 270 million years ago. Both the rock and the prints in it were said to show the same evidence of wear and aging.

Giant tracks, seemingly made by a human being, were found by a government trapper in the Alkali Flats area of Great White Sands, New Mexico, in 1931. A year later a party of four, including O. Fred Arthur, supervisor of Lincoln National Forest, set out to investigate the tracks, with the government trapper Ellis Wright as their guide. They found 13 imprints crossing a relic desert basin in the eastern most foothills of the San Andreas Mountains. Despite the great size of the tracks, the investigators were convinced they were human, "for the prints were perfect and even the insteps were plainly marked." Oval shaped, the prints are 16 to 22 inches long and 8 to 12 inches wide, with a distance between strides of about 5 feet and a separation in width of 2 feet.

The site was revisited in 1972, 1974, and 1981, and more tracks were found. When they were first studied, it had been noted that the imprints were 2 1/2 inches deep. But in 1974 (42 years later) they were between 1 and 1 1/2 inches above the ground! The compacting of the soft earth by the heavy tread of the creature had preserved the prints while the surrounding soil had been eroded by wind and the occasional rainfall. By 1981 the tracks stood well above the surface by several inches. There is no doubt that the tracks were made by living creatures. One suggestion is that they were made in the 1850's by US Army camels, a more accepted view is that they are 10,000 years old, and were made by an extinct animal such as a Mammoth or native camel. But the spacing of the footprints suggests a two legged creature. The mysterious tracks are now protected by archaeologists.

There's also the idea that Polynesians are decended from the Taiwanese (strong genetic link supporting this) and they in fact also made it to South America, yet they did not colonise it for some reason. Probably because they landed in the inhospitable southern tip. I think this is actually described in the paper I linked. It's still compatible with the land-bridge theory.

Since the 1930s, archaeologists generally believed North America was settled by hunters following large game over the land bridge about 13,000 years ago.

"That had been repeated so many times in textbooks and lectures it became part of the common lore," said Dennis Stanford, curator of archeology at the Smithsonian Institution. "People forgot it was only an unproven hypothesis."

Yes, that's why the anthropological community is now leaning towards a much earlier land-bridge crossing followed by a coastal colonisation.

That's what I thought.  I'm not aware of any evidence for this idea (the paleoglyph earlier in the thread doesn't appear to be evidence as far as I can see).  Would you care to share the evidence that led you to this idea?  That's the big thing I missed, and without it I don't understand the assertion.

I can claim that the color red was the first that humans were able to percieve, but unless I say why, the reader has no basis to evaluate the claim.  I could just be making a completely random unfounded assertion (which in this case I am), or one that pleases my aesthetic sensibilities independent of fact.

The fact remains that you're the one making wild assertions which don't appear to jibe with genetic and anthropological evidence.  The burden of proof is on you here.

You seem to be basing your full "hypothesis"(and I'm using the word loosely) on the notion that the civilizations of south America were superior to those of north America. However the Anasazi in modern day New Mexico built a vast civilization Including the massive 700 room Pueblo Bonita in Chaco Canyon, supported by a very technologically sophisticated network of irigation canals, and connected to "rural" outlying pueblos by over 400 miles of roads.

Along the Mississippi, in modern day Illinois Cahokia was certainly as developed as any of the south American city's. It could have easily rivaled many of the European towns and city's in existence around the time of Americas "rediscovery" by the Europeans....and they managed all of that 2500 to 3000 years ago.

If I was to wager a guess, I'd say the totality of your knowledge of the various native American peoples is based on what you read in your high school history book. Maybe a little more study is in order.

Yes, absolutely.  Now please, what's your grounds for questioning it?  What evidence points to the idea that North Americans migrated up from South America?

It's really not an unreasonable question. You made this thread, surely you had a reason?  Putting forth an idea with absolutely no intention of supporting it is pretty rude.

Absolutely, which is why there are various debates over the specific details of how humans reached America. But they are educated debates, arguments back up with evidence. Your arguments are not backed up with evidence and, frankly, I would not call them educated.

The story of the Hopi journeys shows knowledge that is a study in itself. They speak of struggling through jungles, of building cities and leaving ruins behind. We continue to trace these connections.

The Hopi say that their ancestors migrated from many places and settled near the Grand Canyon. Their story is an interesting one that is also partly covered in the Chaco Canyon article.

The cliff paintings at Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde are guides for Hopi clansmen to follow, and they claim to have built the snake-shaped mounds in the eastern United States.

The amount we don't know about this particular topic far exceeds what we do know. However he has yet to put forth any kind of evidence to back any of it up. As I said, it seems his whole "theory" is based on his perception of the south American civilizations superiority.

40000 years is a very long time, and allot of very long distance trade is known to have taken place. A great many civilizations ceased to exist long before the Europeans arrived, and many more were wiped out afterwards.

Let me break it down for you, nonwo. You started this thread with the aim of debunking the Bering Strait migration hypothesis. You have failed to do so. You also expressed disbelief in the Out-Of-Africa hypothesis, and when asked for your idea on the origin of humanity you suggested a 'lost continent'. So you can surely understand why we are calling you out on your ideas: it is obvious that they lack evidence and they are just generally not very plausible.

I haven't once said you're wrong.

I, like many here, are reserving any judgement until you give us something than an "ndn" creation myth to support your idea.  I will say that the Out of Africa theory is pretty much proven, based on DNA evidence, so your denial of it makes me highly skeptical.

If you're looking for "dissproof" then I'd suggest starting at wikipedia and familiarizing yourself with the currently accepted theories.  Sorry if this is an unfamiliar concept to you, but typically a person seeking to change accepted paradigms familiarizes themselves with the current paradigm and points out its flaws.  Until you tell us why we shouldn't believe this large bulk of evidence, or show an alternate interpretation of it, not many people are going to line up to support your idea.

For a launching point, this page seems to address the concerns that led to your question.

I did.  It addressed a single isolated case, didn't it?  Is there any reason that couldn't have just been an isolated migratory phenomenon?  It looked like it said some "ndns" in a single region of north america have a language which appears to derive from a language used in (northern) south america... unless I've missed something, isolated migration is more parsimonious with this data than your idea.

I should note that I have no background in linguistics, and am not as qualified to understand the nuances of what they're saying.

That donkey dug himself into that hole.

Did you know that a jackass can see all four feet at the same time? They often have trouble seeing what is directly in front of them though, and as a result get easily spooked.
