to dunk or not to dunk?!
    #8811622 - 08/22/08 02:39 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

alright, i've got a few fully colonized bags of Agrocybe aegerita on wood substrate, they are starting to reach up towards the tops of the bags, so i want to birth them.  would my best bet be to just cut the hole bag off and give them a dunk before going in the FC?  or should i just cut the bag off and toss in the FC?  or conversely, should i just cut a few holes in the bags to initiate pinning, then stick the bag in the FC?

Well, I am under the impression that dunking will hydrate your colonized substrate and give you a much "better" flush(s). Hopefully this helps you out.

how long of a dunk?  is it fine if they go for a 24 hour dunk?  i'm going to go out of town just for the day, come back into town on bus tomorrow.  i'll wait till right before i leave to do it, but it'll probably be near 24 hours before it will come out...

12-24 hours is about the average for dunking, if I am not mistaken.

you can go up to 48 hours some say. I've noticed controlling dunk time is more effective at controlling the timing of cakes fruiting rather than the moisture content of the cakes, beyond 12 h anyway.

yeah, that's what i generally go by.... so shouldn't be too big a problem.  i'm gonna do some agar work, then move some LC to some jars, start those colonizing, then i'll do that last thing before i pack all my shit up to take off.  Haven't gotten the best dunking method yest, am i good to just shove the into my pressure cooker (biggest pot that i have) then just put a piece of mesh with another pot over it?

like so...? :

is this fine?  they aren't fully submerged, but mostly...
