Trying to Case
    #881380 - 09/13/02 01:15 AM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Hi,  lets say you want to case, but your cakes are already showing friuting and there not completely colonized yet.  Could I wait till the cakes are done colonizing and then case regarless of the fruits?  Or will the fruits rot and cause contams? By showing signs of fruiting I mean lot's and lot's of the mycelium knots turning brown.  Any ideas would be apreciated.

Wow, sounds like they got too much light during colonization. they should be kept in the dark til you are ready to birth them or case them. if you are going to birth them, at full colonization you introduce light and hope for pins.

You may have luck at the point you are at, to scrape off the non colonized parts and case them, but be careful to maintain clean conditions as you are still very susceptable to contams.

good luck

Thankx for the insight   I'll make sure i keep them in complete darkness from now on in.  So , if i just use the colonized parts it shouldn't matter that it's starting to pin.
Perhaps, if I was to pick off the fruits do you see any improvements?

Yeah, just take out the cake, scrape off the uncolonized part, pick off the pins (yes they may lead to contamination if left, because they will rot) , crumble the cakes and case them. and then be PATIENT
