Question about different growing substrates..

hey shroomery, i have attempted to grow mushrooms 2 times before with alright results. But all i did was follow one of those guides with the perlite/verm in the jars then into a casing. i was wondering if these 3lb blocks of substrate tthat they sell will work better?
http://sporeworks.com/store/catalog/Indoor-Mushroom-Grow-Kits-and-Spawn-Starter-Kits-p-1-c-255.html
all of the 3lb bags on that page is what i am talking about. I am considering buying one of them for my next attempt. anybody ever use those before? and if so, which one would be best? i was thinking the sawdust one, but then the rye berry might be better, for all i know. haha thanks

Kits are garbage. Use a grain such as Rye, and case it with straw/poo or something like it. Peat Moss and Coir work fine.

well you see, what i was going to do is get one of those 3lb bags, inoculate it, and let the mycelium grow all over it. then i would break it up and put it inside of a bag of poo/straw mix and leave it in the bag...how would that work out? let me know

oh yeah man i totally know where your coming from. Its just for me, i still live at home and it just seems so convenient to have all of the work done and out of the way so that all i have to do is inoculate and let them fruit haha. its alot easier to hide from the parents.

^^True.
Also, read up on those bags...I have read numerous times where they get contaminated before they ever finish colonizing.

Yeah, totally a bad idea to grow at your parents house. If you really want to grow, grow outside. Not only will it be really rad to have your own personal outdoor patch, but, chances are, assuming youre in the right climate for it, the mushrooms you grow outside would probably be better than the ones grown inside. (I live in Oregon so I can grow azures, and I can't fucking wait). Not to mention the fact that if you keep addidng layers and nutrients to it every year, you'll continue to get flushes of your very own outdoor patch. Or, just wait till you move out. OR, still yet, if you're going to grow at your peezis house, maybe DON'T spend your money on the premades, and make your own. I'm currently using coffee grounds, straw, steer manure, and coco coir. Find a time when your parents won't be home, and then pasteurize it. For a turkey bag full of substrate, it should only take about 3-4 hours to do so. Prep is hella easy as well. You could always prep it at a friends house? Eh. Just don't fuck your parents over because of it, that'd be fucked up. Good luck.

thanks man, i have always considered an outdoor patch, but i have no idea how i would go about doing that. I already know how to grow indoors. Plus, i live in upstate ny, almost near canada so im not too sure how well the cubes will grow out there. Im going to have 50/50 poostraw mix, if i take the colonized mycelium bar, and mix it with the poo and straw, will it just grow outside where i live?

I am also pretty sure almost any mod would highly discourage you from growing at a parents. Just not smart, outdoor patch in some local woods would be smarter as suggested but waiting to you move out is best suggestion.

Yeah. Outdoor stuff, as I read and understand, is pretty simple. You should be able to grow some psilo cyanescens, maybe some azures. You live near the coast? Look up what mushrooms grow wild in your area. That could point you in the right direction. You could always go hunting, take some sporeprints, or fuck, even clone a couple, that way you have little buddies that truely grow in your area. Meh.
