Hey,

I have 12 1/2 pint BRF cakes knocked up with some chunky Hawaiian and hiding in the warmth of a closet. Mycelium growth is decent to slow in some jars. I only steam cooked them on the stove in a large pot for one hour, so Im wary of contams. I had not purchased my PC yet! However, everything seems to be alright so far(this is my first ever attempt).

I am also planning on doing either a popcorn tek or a rye tek in some quart jars, about seven(thats what my PC can fit).

My FCs are small 19qt rubbermaids with snap shut lids. I plan on drilling 2-4 1" diameter holes on all 4 faces of the container and stuffing with polyfill. I have 1 smaller ziploc brand container that will hold the substrate and casing(is there a term for the two of them together?) in each FC. It is 10 1/4"x6"x3 1/4" deep.

Temps here are good, 70-85 degrees pretty consistently, with high humidity. My closet stays up and around the higher 90%. I plan on having one air stone connected through a back vent hole and sitting in 1 liter bottles with their tops cut off and full of sterile water(of course). It will be running 24/7 to insure high humidity levels. I will also have two fans circulating air throughout the space. A HEPA filter is also going to be moved into the space.

SO!

My question is about the casing ratios. I know Im going to start with 50/50 verm/coir, and I am wondering on the amount of peat, gypsum, coffee grounds, and or bloodmeal to add to that.

My layers will be like so for each 3 1/4" deep pan(bottom to top)
BRF tek:

1/4" casing
4 jars of food processor chopped substrate.(Im guessing about 2")
1/2" casing
Possibly some frosting? Is it necessary?

Rye or Popcorn tek:

1/4" casing
1-2 qt jars per pan?
1/2" casing

Updates soon! Critics are welcome, please verbally abuse me on the proper way to shroom!

Thanks for reading this

PICTURE UPDATE

Here are some pics of all my jars in progress.

Side One

Side Two

My BRF seem to be stalling out - three have yellow blotches. Is it a contam?
These three are the ones that concern me.

Yes, those are band-aids covering the inoculation holes! I'm a lazy bastard that ran out of tape. I'm also aware that I have too much moisture in my popcorn jars. I never allowed the corn to drain in the colander.

So that's what I have going. Following ray40cals advice, that one jar is a WBS/popcorn mix with TX goin. It's set up for grain to grain   There was mycelium growth on the 3rd day. I feel I nailed that jar with good procedure.

Sounds good to me.. I don't know much about lime etc.. i buy pre-ph balanced peat and just pinch some gypsum into the mix.  2 in. is a good substrate depth for grain trays, if you want to double your yield and trays mix a quart of coir for every quart of grain or brf. At that ratio it will only take 3-4 days to get fully colonized but still double your yield.

Double my yield? Yes please, I think I'll take your advice sir.

Veda: I used to have various herbage growing which required a large water reservoir. That's part of the reason why it's so high. Also, there was mold growing behind the baseboard and up the sheetrock. I took it to it with oxy cleaner. I also nuked the carpet with baking soda, and pressed towels down to remove any possible moisture. I sprayed the shit out of it with Lysol and vacuumed every little nook. It's been getting lower day by day, it used to be 99% which is nuts. It smelled really musty in there and you could tell shit was wet.

So it has been 5 days since I shot some KSSS into the 5 quart jars of popcorn. I followed the tek on here to a T. Not a spot of mycelium. Is this normal?

Pictures should be coming soon! Hunting down a camera :P

Nah, that's not uncommon with popcorn. That's why grain 2 grain, or LC w/ popcorn is the best way. It takes longer to germinate from a multispore syringe than other grains, but once it does it spreads myc like wildfire.

With that tek, I've used it the first time with popcorn and it did fine, but I've found that a 20 hour soak and only a 30 - 45 minute simmer work better in my case. Otherwise kernels might split. The only reason i use popcorn is because I can't find rye, and i don't like doing big jars of WBS. Here's something that can help you for future reference, especially if you have wbs on hand.    Knock up a 4oz jelly jar of PC'd wbs, done just like the 6T wbs tek but on a much smaller scale. This will colonize quickly and give you enough colonized wbs to use grain2grain style with any grain of your choice. I love this method because the millet is tiny and creates a ton of inoculation points.  Just put a tablespoon of colonized wbs into a couple of pint popcorn jars 3 days ago, already at 30% colonization and need to be shaked. This makes the total colonization time from inoculation to full colonization, a week or less even w/ popcorn.

Okay, so you mentioned split kernels. Quite a few of them are split in each jar. Is this a problem?

That is a really good idea man, thanks. I was interested in trying wbs next.. I'll try grain2grain once these batches are up and fruiting.

Do you PC all of your utensils? Like your spoon?

Thanks again!
