Monotub questions

I wanna try doing a monotub but I had a few questions first. I know monotubs are supposed to have the casing layer made directly in the bottom of the tub but I was wondering if it was possible to put individual casings in one? Also if I was going to make a casing directly in the tub could I crumble up like 12 half pint PF style cakes and use them to make a casing probobly using the 50/50 tek? Also I was planning on using a small 6500K light to trigger pinning in the monotub but was wondering if it would dry it out. Thanks for the help!

If I understand you correctly that wouldn't be a monotub but a terrarium. The name says it all -- one tub one strain.
I suggest taking those 12 pf cakes and spawning to coir. That will give you a good substrate depth for some nice sized fruits

yeah, go bulk in some form in your tub. screw having individual casings in it, spawn that shit to some coir and coffee grounds, some gypsum, a bit of poo if you can and dump it all into the tub on a big trashbag (it will stick to the substrate so as it shrinks after a flush or 2 you will not get side pins). it's so simple and my friend usually gets 4 or 5 dry oz. from his first flush with one.

ha sounds like if i'm going try a monotub I should go big or go home eh? What about the light? Would using a single 15watt CFL 6500k dry out the casing to fast?

It doesn't have to be big. I have 2 tubs that are 180 qts. each,(now those are big IMO LOL) 2 that are 64 qts, and 2 that are 36 qts. Then I have 4 that are 16 gts. How many strains are you talking about? If you have a big tub and 2 stains then you can put 2 bags in it and do 2 in 1. But I would do as many tubs as you have strains.
I use a 15 wt or something like that about a foot to 18 in away from the surface and a humidifier hosed in to the side of my tub. In a mono you only want to turn the humidifier on after pin set. Its in my gallery if you want to see how its hooked up.

Perlite and cakes are not a monotub and is a shotgun FC made famous by RR.. That is good for fruiting cakes a monotub is good for fruiting bulk grows like coir or straw/poo... Here is a link to a mono tub this is what you would want to build for a bulk grow it doesn't use perlite...

I didn't mean to make it sound like my tub with the cakes and perlite is a mono. I use it as a FC when it has perlite and cakes. I use it as a mono when doing bulk.

ya i know its not really a mono tub with perlite and cakes i just call it that anyways . I bought some WBS today and some pint jars and plan on using that instead of crumbling cakes, I will prob case it with 50/50 just because I don't have access to poo. maybe I could do coir though where do can you buy it?

HERE is a very inexpensive place to get it. You will pay about $5 for 1 brick in a pet store verses $5 for three plus about $10 shipping. If you get a few pack you will save a bundle.

cool i will prob case with that, do people usually mix the coir with verm or something? Also I constructed my monotub and I think I may have made the bottom holes to low they are about 3 1/2 inches from the bottom of the hole to the bottom of the chamber, I wanted to get them right above the casing but I think I put them to far down now

Well if you put your holes to far down that mean you can not make your substrate layer as thick.. Alot of the times people put 4 inch substrate and 1/2inch layer of casing so you should put your holes at 5 to 5.5 inches from the bottom of the tub.. Also Coir/verm is only a mix for the cassing layer.. If you are looking for a substrate use straight coir or a coir/coffee grounds mix.. But straight coir is good enough to spawn to, then case with 50/50 coir, verm or 100% verm or 50/50 peat moss, verm..

There is a good 50/50+ casing mix that you add some lime to it. The lime will keep trech from growing.
When you put your bag in the bottom make sure it comes up to the 5 and a half inch mark. Put your sub in to 5 inches and then when you case bring it up a half inch. You can put polyfill in the holes and fold any remaining part of the bag toward the outside and the CO2 will still be able to escape the tub.

Now that I think about it my buddy has horses so I could probably bum some poo off him. I could use that as a substrate and then use coir and verm as a casing layer. Does growing with poo smell really bad?
