Contamination with New Moon syringe question.
    #8812966 - 08/22/08 10:33 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I got some spore syringes from earth tongue.com website that came in a "New Moon" type syringe. Much different than the type that i am used to. The fluid is very dark in color, almost black compared to being clear. The slip of paper included in the package stated that that is normal for them to look that way and when injecting i would see dark puddles on the side of jars. After following all the normal steps and a few days after injecting i noticed a little black still in the injection sites. I have nice growth as u can see in the pics. Not sure if this is contamination or due to the dark color of the solution. (A note tho: I did have a clogged syringe on a few stabs and injected more than i wanted to. Dont know if that helps or not.) I looked around on the web to see if any one have had the same problem and ran across this http://www.shroomtalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=20120 . Any insight would be great. Sorry for the bad pics, bad camera.

Yeah if you use a really dark syringe it will look like that it seems fine, it has happened to me also when I used very dark syringes, just keep us updated as time goes by just in case

I have the same issue, same vendor, same syringes, same black discoloration intermixed with healthy looking Myc!
only at the injection sites.  Also sticky plunger caused heavy noculating in the one jar which has the black.
Good luck, stay in touch with your results, I would love to hear about it.

Update!  I received an email back from ET after sending the above pic to them, read below
Vermonster, this is normal for the NEW MOON syringes. The black will never disappear.
I try to make it understandable with the little piece of paper that comes with the syringes, but maybve I should make it more understandable.
Your jar looks perfect.

yea it was black like that for a while< but every thing turned out good. mine did not look that black, just around the stab sites. but im guessing if u injected more than a 1/4 - 1cc, you would get a bigger black puddle than i did. but hope yours go good also. et seems ok but im now sticking to lil shop of spores, great selection and fast shipping.

Next time, order from a reputable vendor.  They have the second worst reputation in the business.

RR you mean did have the second worse rep, the new owner took over a few years back I believe and is now running great, another site called earthstounge (notice the incorrect spelling difference from the real) was getting orders and not sending them out so the real site suffered instead, since then he supplies fresh mushrooms to most restaurants in tx, and has not been a problem since ben took over.
They are not vendors so I wont go on but it's not fair calling them the second worst vendor.

No, I stand by what I said.  If someone bought the site, they're an idiot for not changing the name.  In addition, people recently have been having trouble with the syringes ordered in the last few months, so it's irrelevant if the site changed hands or not.

There's also charcoal or some other dye in the syringes to make them 'look' dark to fool noobs who think more spores is better, instead of simply providing a good product.

Good luck with that...

your gonna need it!~

ET probably has the 3rd worst reputation as far as Mycology Vendors on the Internet go.

1st = Spore Trading Post

2nd = Sporebank

Your gonna have a hard road to sew...

to change the reputation of ET...

you would have been better off starting a new business from the ground up...IMEO

ET is known for contaminated syringes, terrible service and ripping people off.

I'd know...I'm one of the Vendor/Sponsor forum Moderators and I've seen it for countless years!~

I know, that sucks. I've been reading up on all the old threads. Well all I can do is my best. Too bad I wasn't told that when I bought the company. I already have too much invested in it to go back now. But I will try my best, so far its been mostly satisfying but yet frustrating due to its past.
Some support from you Roadkill and the other moderators would mean a lot to me.
I added an explanation on site of what new moon is if you'd like to look at it.

I am a happy customer of ET and am enjoying great results from their products.  I found them before I found the shroomery and would love to continue suporting them as a sponsor.  I can only speak from my experience but I have always been a forgiving soul.  If Ben is sincere he may have some skills or resources to further benefit the shroomery as a community beyond simply paying the fee to advertise through the forum.  I believe that every man deserves a chance, Lord knows I've had mine.
that's my 2 cents...keep the change.

It's been two weeks and that jar should be fully colonized and either fruiting or ready to fruit.

Update?  Pictures?

Wow, it's cool to hear people are following my progress!
Here is that previously nasty looking jar as of 5 minutes ago.  The MYC has all but hidden the black gook that had me all affluster.  I have been having trouble keeping the incubator warm (it's getting cold here) without getting too hot so I attribute some slowing to that and the incorrect jars.  Live & learn.  Overall I am happy so far, what do you think?

All three pics are the same jar as I spun it around, I am waiting for that last 5-8% to colonize before I give it the 5 day countdown to DNR!  I think I may just take a cool tubby with my new MC friends before I chill them out in the fridge overnight, just have some quality US time u know?  Bonding!

*Edit-  I noticed in the pics the jars look a tad wet, they don't look that wet in person but my camera is really good at getting detail in macro.  Not much I can do about the hydro content now eh? I have made sure the lids are barely finger tight for more gas exchange.

Actually it was 11 days since my last post with pic, I anticipate dunk & roll in 6-8 days. should be fully colonized by Sunday-Mon.

Thanks for the update.  Next time, you'll definitely get better performance with 1/2 pints.

Normal room temperature is fine.  There is very little difference between keeping your jars at 75F and 81F, and then growth begins to fall off above that.  You'll probably get faster growth with your jars out in the open than in a sealed box.  I don't recommend incubators.

Up here in the NE US room temp is 58...
I have my jars in the box they came in sitting in a dresser drawer on a heating pad.  As the temp dips I am ok but when I heat my house I have to turn down the jar heater.  I am trying to find 1/2 pint WIDE MOUTH jars but they have been rare or sold out all over during this time of year.  Old ladies making jams and jellies for Christmas buy them all.  All in all I am at day 18 or 20, I inoculated either the 4th or the 6th I forgot.  so it's not like I am suffering a huge lag time all things considered.  it is trying the patience tho!  I am at 11 jars for 12 with only 1 lost to something green I didn't wish to deal with.

A word to the wise.  If you HAVE to heat your jars, put the pad on top.  Putting the pad on bottom can cook the jars and create hot spots in the pad that can start a fire.

I'm at high elevation in the mountains and it's been getting down to 9F to 12F(-12C) at night.  I've had a fire going in the wood stove for over a month now, and just keep jars on a shelf nearby where it's about 75F to 80F in the area.

here is the above jar today, noticable growth in 24 hrs.  almost 100%

and another cake that is appearing to be getting a lil dry in the jar.  does anyone think this spot is possibly contam?  no slowing of growth.  This could just be the verm underneath but I dunno.  need a 2nd or 3rd opinion.  The cakes are shrinking as they near 100%.  Look at the jar to the right behind...same discoloration towards the bottom where it's shrinking.
