Is it reasonable to grow poppy pods inside?

If you know what you are doing, it would be fine.
Take care of it, and it will take care of you.

Nope, not really. It needs too much rootspace.

I started my Persian Whites inside under HPS lights late last year. They went dormant until early spring in which time i brought them outside and put them in the ground and they shot out like a cannon in new growth.

I think it's best just to grow them inside to winter them until it's warm enought to bring them out. That gives you a head start and an extra early first crop come next poppy season.

What sturmer said is fine, if you are just growing a few. On the other hand, I have an 6x8 foot bed. Its just not feasible. Besides they do fine over the winter outdoors. I hope to do a growlog on mine this time around. I just bought a 20x4 ft raised bed "railings" (lack of better word). It is perfect for this type of thing. Can't wait to sow some seeds.

growing poppies indoors is a waste of time and resources IMO.
even for over wintering...
small poppy plants will over winter just fine outdoors if you sow the seed in the autumn...
if you want to avoid early germination of the seed then just sow the seed in winter or early spring...

poppies are the easiest of ethnobotanicals to grow, they need so little attention.

however they can be grown indoors with lighting but i've never seen indoor poppies that reached anything like their full potential.

Don't do indoors, waste of time/space/money.

Just throw those babies by the handful on recently furrowed land before the rains in the fall and you'll have fields o' harvestable poppies by late spring.

It very much so is possible to grow poppies indoors. Here is my recent indoor Tasmanian grow, just using two four foot shop lights. They got 5 foot tall indoors in my garage, and that was all the light they received. What do you guys think?

Nice plants you got there, KGB. They certainly can be grown indoors but it's so much cheaper outdoors. Don't forget that poppies are resistant to freezing. They can even be covered by snow and come back soon as they thaw out. Where I am the heat is the problem. I wait until about Oct and then plant.

nice plants, but if those are 4' flourescent tubes then the plants don't look anything like 5' tall and definately didn't reach their full potential as they would if they were grown outdoors.

good effort though, one of the better indoor poppy grows i've seen

another point about growing poppies indoors: you have no chance of pleading innocence if you get caught.

lol maybe you could get off on a technicality if you were growing other stuff/flowers that aren't illegal say you got them in a wildflower packet or something, it'd be less chance of getting caught since they don't smell.

well yeah that wouldn't go down at all, but if you had multiple legal strains of poppies(oriental, california etc.) inside your house you might be able to claim that you didn't know that any of the varieties of poppies were illegal as long as there wasn't any ooze on any of 'em.

Hmm,maybe they were along the line of 3 foot tall,I forgot, after I got a few pods,I cut them back, and put them outdoors, and then they got up to my neck tall. They just kept on flowering.Regardless.they can be grown indoors with good results.

I grew 3 footers in 20 oz plastic cups.
A big SOG of those could definitely have a good yield.
Just as with cannabis. If you had big plants outdoors with a lot of rootspace they will get huge buds on them but that doesn't mean an indoor SOG won't yield anything.

yeah, like cpw said, you could do a sog with them with really good results.I germinated mine outdoors, and then moved them indoors.Of course you can get a hell of a lot bigger, and better plants outdoors, this was just an experiment of mine. Also, this would be a perfect grow for somebody that lives in an apartment, and has no yard to grow in.

Im growing outdoors, its so much easier. I havent tended to my poppies at all except for a small weeding, cant wait for them to flower.

You are never gonna get busted for poppies unless your are a real stupid-dodgey-cunt. It takes alot for them to attract attention.
