Another Icelandic ID request
    #8812785 - 08/22/08 07:43 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi again, camped out last night and found these very close to where we slept  i have a feeling i know what these are after viewing a lot of pics but i would like to hear from some more experienced people.

Habitat:
Southern part of the Westfjords in iceland, in a paddock that looks like it once had sheep or cows but isnt currently in use. Found a couple attached to the side of what was once dung but looks like it has broken down into a soil of sorts. nothing growing directly in dung.

Gills:
Dark gills, they seem to concave inwards towards the top of the cap

Stem:
Long and thin, whitish when picked but drying to brown. Dry when picked

Cap:
A little slimy when picked but not all of them, high cap with a nipple on top, brown mostly but some fawn, some darker brown, smooth texture. found a couple with little "frills" around the bottom

Spore print color:
I only managed to get a few dodgy spore-prints but they appear to be black

Bruising:
no bruising after 12hr

Other information:
only managed to smell them after a day in the car, so they just smell like earthy mushrooms, not too strong a scent.

side on view, notice the few with frills around the bottom, are these ok too?

a bunch of them freshly picked from the back

and side

and top

one in the grass, bit out of focus unfortunately :frown:

side on view, notice they got a bit darker 20mins'ish after picking

shot of the gills after a day in the car

doesnt quite have the same nipple shape but i think its still the same species, there are a couple more like this, are they the same?

dodgy spore print made in a moving car  hehe, spore print looks black to me.

close up after a bit of drying, apologies for the use of flash.

a bunch of them dried

i dont know what this is but it was pretty

thanks again for the help, its wonderful to have such a good base of experienced people on here looking out for peoples well being. much appreciated!

have a nice day
-D

thanks, i thought maybe they were, or a conocybe. Finding these sems is hard, so many mushrooms look like them (to my untrained eye anyway)

what was the main give away for you (that made you realise it wasn't them) so i know to look out for it next time, i must have looked at 100's of pics of semilanceata's before picking.

have a nice day

Pay close attention to the pattern on the cap when you are referencing pictures. Liberty caps are usually quite distinct when you look at the fine detail from the other species they grow alongside.

Note on the following picture, the stalks are clearly the wrong colour for liberty caps. Liberty caps tend to turn lighter yellowish colour as they get older and dry. Also, semilanceata I find to have a more "substantial" stalk than those ones would have.

And a final thing, the spore print of liberty caps is dark purple. Good luck finding them! :mushroom2:

thanks for the advice, your right about the cap detail, upon looking at them again, a general trait i see in alot of lib pics is a sort of vertical striping over the cap (which seems harder to see in the more mature specimens)

as for the stalk colour, well, they weren't too old in that pic, and i have seen examples of libs with stalks that colour (water logged apparently), but ill try and keep that advice in mind as well, thankyou kindly for the help!

have a nice day

Those ones with frills look like Panaeolus sphinctrinus. The other ones may be the same but I don't know. Maybe someone else does.

^ They are not toxic. There is dispute as to whether or not they are active or if the test results which concluded this were contaminated I believe.

If they are active then the conc of actives is low, meaning you would have to eat loads.

I don't see any Conocybe species there, I think the other Pans there are P. campanulatus.

The little white one might be Coprinopsis ephemeroides.

The others are possibly Panaeolus papilionaceus var. parvisporus formerly Panaeolus campanulatus. and Panaeolus sphinctrinus.
