Upper Yosemite Falls
    #8804104 - 08/21/08 03:04 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

A few decades ago, my best bud and I headed out to Yosemite for a weekend of hiking and camping.

We decided to hike to Upper Yosemite Falls. It was a hot day and it took over three hours to make the 3000+ foot switchback ascent. Good thing we brought plenty of water (about 3 gallons apiece) as we drank it all and were still thirsty.

At the top we enjoyed the view then started to head inland. There was a small, but rapid stream feeding the pool at the top of the cliffs. We were several hundred feet inland from the edge of the falls when we saw a college-age girl crossing the stream. It was only about 2.5 to 3 foot deep and not that difficult to ford. The young lady slipped on a mossy rock and fell on her backpack which acted as a float.

She was helpless as the stream carried her down. My buddy and I quickly dropped our packs and sprinted towards her, but rocks, tree roots and the speed of the gushing, but innocuous looking stream, kept us just out of reach.

She said nothing, but glanced at us with a mixture of terror and hope as she splashed around trying to grab a hold of a tree root or boulder. There was nothing.

I will never forget how she looked right at me with eyes big as saucers as she was swept around the bend into the pool feeding the falls. She quietly and simply said, "Oh, no!" as she was swirled around  the whirlpool a few times before being whisked off to oblivion on the ultimate thrill ride.

Is this a true story?

I love the top of Yosemite Falls, I've jumped the guard rail, sat next to the edge and lit one up.

If you walk near the stream today, there are warning signs because of that tragedy.

It’s been a particularly hazardous year at Yosemite, with five accidental deaths so far.

beautiful falls at the base of mt. mitchell, a little off the beaten path.  derx, his girlfriend, and i went up into them and vaped some dmt

so really, are you making a poor commentary about her bravery and acceptance of death?  or maybe her foolishness in not trying harder?  or maybe that despite how hard she fought, there was no chance for her survival?

Good that you can joke about it.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,

to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

humans are so cute when they frown at smokers, picture takers on mountain tops, electric fence pissers and other rule breakers
