CD Encryption Help
    #8812359 - 08/22/08 07:34 PM (9 years, 9 months ago)

Hey, is it possible to encrypt files onto a CD where even high government officials couldn't get into it because they don't know the pass to view the files on that CD? How could SWIM do this?

No I know that. I just want them to be password protected meaning you can't open that file until you fill out a password. That's what I meant.

I'll let the people I want it to read know but that won't be on the cd....

I've heard pgp encryption is quite good, search for it.

I've also heard the latest editions of winrar are secured.  Maybe Seuss will comment on it, but both should be sufficient, I'd imagine, unless the CIA gets after you.  For domestic law enfrocement on your level I'd imagine it would be uncrackable.

Do a search for more information and better analysis than I can give- I'm only parroting here.

I did a search on here and found 'PGP' to be the top dog but it's like 70$. lol .... I want to encrypt folders....I got a lot of files. I'll keep researching, thanks though. possibly would this be better in the Science and Technology forum?

You can archive it with both 7zip and winrar with password protection.

Locknote creates a standalone encrypted text editor. It is password protected and uses AES 256 encryption. You can just rename the exe file and create multiple instances.

You'd be surprised at the technology that domestic law enforcement has, and uses on a regular basis.
Encryption will keep your family and friends prying eyes away from your information, but anyone with sufficient
IT knowledge could crack it in no time. So just password protect it and get on with it.

This isn't true. Programs like PGP/TC are used by Fortune 500 companies, governments, and military around the world. With current technology these encryption algorithms are unbreakable and are expected to remain that way for many years to come. Brute force against schemes like AES256 are just too costly in terms of time (thousands of years) and money (untold amounts)...

If you mean 'crack' as in steal your passphrase that is 10x more likely than attacking the code. LEO installs keylogger, snags your passphrase, he 'cracked' the personal files.

lol so much for swim!

hehe. Anyway, you have to dismount your TC container before its fully protected. (either clicking dismount or restarting/shutting down your computer)

Be aware of memory leaks (especially with Windows XP/Vista) which will store your pass phrase onto your hard drive, completely unencrypted. How to avoid this? Well, you can read up on it, it's exhaustive...The better alternative is to use linux when working w/ encryption.

edit: pay attention Security Precautions w/ TC
