How can you change yourself to better the whole?
    #8811978 - 08/22/08 06:13 PM (10 years, 28 days ago)

What kind of thoughts/actions can you think of that will better the whole. The whole being your group of friends or society, etc. I think that if we change our personalities to match others that are full of love, compassion and friendliness. But then again what if we don't and we just cope with all personalities, i'm kinda lost in the fact that i want to be known for things. Known for my compassion and my actions, with good actions and good intentions only.

Is there even a way to make the world a better place?

Is it out of our hands?

Are all our actions instinct?

Can we change for the better?

Let me know your thoughts on the subject.

Peace,
Droz

I guess it really comes down to the golden rule. You have to live your life the way you would like those around you to live.

I think always keeping in mind the perspective of others can teach us allot. There are always many different ways of viewing the same situation, and I try and keep that in mind. I'm sure I sometimes forget though.

Critical thinking is key.

It actually wasnt all that bad. Other than a few trees down, and 2 days of rain its been pretty mellow. We havent had any real storms around here in a few years.

The world is a pretty great place... but then again... there is suffering. It is filled with suffering. You must learn to rise above it in your own mind. This is the only way to make your OWN world a better place. Once you are at peace with your own world, you can begin making peace with the world around you. Then we can all improve the world we live in.
Quote:

Is it out of our hands?

No, like I said, we can all do things... The Green movement is a great example of a way people are starting to do the right thing. 20 years ago, Green was nothing more than a color to most people. But now it symbolizes the need for better energy alternatives, less CO2 emissions, and a cleaner Earth. We can lessen the impact we have on the Earth, starting in our daily routines, habits, and household. Everything we do makes a difference. Once we change our own lives, we can start looking past our backyards and see that there are others living in poverty who we can help... like the 13 million children growing up in low-income communities in the USA; 50% of them who won't graduate high school. Or we can look abroad and find poor communities in India that are full of starvation, low-quality water, etc. There is PLENTY we can do to raise others' quality of life while not significantly damaging our own.
Quote:

Are all our actions instinct?

Absolutely not. We have consciousness. This is a HUGE responsibility on us. Some people don't think, and they don't use their consciousness to the best of its abilities. These people go along with the crowd and don't improve their own life, or the lives of others around them. However, the immense power of our brains allows us to do powerful things. This includes the power to think and make decisions based on what we deem as right and wrong. True, we base our sense of 'right and wrong' on what society has implanted into us, which is based on delusion. However, we since we live in a societal world, and not in a zen monestary, we must live in some delusion. as long as we can recognize this fact, it should not make a difference in the long run.
Quote:

Can we change for the better?

If we are truly satisfied with our lives and what we have done with them, we shouldn't feel as though we need to change. When we are at peace with our own minds, and we are at peace with what we are doing to try and better the world, we don't mind being. Just being. Being exactly what we are at the present moment and not needing to change.

Yes! By changing our own perceptions regarding it. By choosing to seek understanding on the aspects that bother or confuse us, instead of dreaming to change the world according to our plans.

The best thing anyone can do to help others is find otu who they truly are.
When you do you see yourself in all other beings & so love flows naturally & effortlessly. When you see 'me & you us & them' fear is natural.

"To change the world is not your business
To change yourself is not your duty
To awaken to your true nature is your opportunity"

Discovering our true nature is all that is necessary. ALL problems dissolve under the light of seeing its all inside you, recognize that & love is so easy, it just is, & love is the only thing that can 'change the world' for the better.

We are that love

:peace:

A question: why do you care about the whole? My advice: live and succeed for yourself. If you feel this way due to a guilt, then you have the whole a sanction, a claim of need for your help. Trade value for value. If you truly value altruism, so be it, but it seems rather stupid to me.
