black walnut wood chips for casing?
    #8811760 - 08/22/08 05:17 PM (9 years, 11 months ago)

Hey. A guy at my has this huge slab of black walnut which he using to make a dinner table.
There is a shitload of wood shavings (very fine to thick) left all around, so I scooped some up.

I was thinking for a future casing mix... 30/30/30,, vermiculite/peat moss/black walnut shavings

what do you guys think? Should i just stick to the 50/50 of the verm/peat?\\

i'll post a pic later on

Never use wood in a casing.  Trichoderma will eat it up and ruin your grow.

I would be careful using black walnut chips for anything.

I have a black walnut tree and have found they contain a chemical, juglone, which is very toxic to many plants/growing things. Some plants it doesn't bother at all, others it kills. The chemical is in every part of the black walnut tree.

I am curious if you could use black walnut chips for an outdoor bed though - it certainly is a hard wood. Can you tell me anything about that, RR?
