Double Layered Felt as a Filter Disc Substitute?

I'm always looking for cheaper and better alternatives to what's out there.  I know that there a several alternatives to using the expensive filter discs.  I've had a lot of success by simply plugging a quarter inch hole in the lid with cotton.  However, that only works if the hole is fairly small.  For larger holes, like half an inch in diameter or larger, has anyone tried using a double layer of felt?  One layer could be siliconed in place on the outside and another layer adhered on the inside.  Has anyone tried this?  It sounds like it would work.

Some may say that felt is much too porous.  They may be right.  However, I would argue that if air is being filtered passively through the felt, there isn't a need for the porosity to be measured at the one micron level.  Air is not being actively pumped through the felt.  Therefore, if there's no force actively driving contaminating spores through the felt, contaminants only need to be caught in the fibers of the felt and not trapped in sub-micron size pores.

What do you think?  Comments anyone?

I've never heard of anyone using felt - why not use tyvek or polyfill if you're trying to save cash?

I would use tyvek or polyfill..  Tyvek is free and polyfill is like 3 bucks for a bag that would last you a good while..  Also on another note the felt would not keep out contaminants..

I've never used tyvek or polyfil.  I've heard about them but could never find a mushroom supplier that sold them.  For what purposes are they originally sold for? Where would I buy them?  In a drug store?  Hardware store?

the post office has tyvek envelopes for express overnight shipping and they are free! polyfill is just synthetic pillow stuffing...go to your local wal-mart and ask for pillow stuffing

:congrats:  :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:  :congrats:

Tyvek comes in the form of mailing envelopes?  Wow!  Neat!  And polyfill is a type of stuffing?  Great!  I'm off to WalMart and the post office.  Thanks a bundle Bud.
Cheers.

You can also get the tyvek online up to 800 envelopes at once.. LINK  But make sure you don't get caught using them for filters technically its a federal offense to deface government property.. But if you get caught I am sure it would be the least of your worries..
