Why don't you ship the agar agar without mixing it for him? Let him "make" his mix when he gets the solid block, (or powder)?

It means: :goodluck:

Yeah, weigh out how much your friend needs for his recipe and just send him those chunks with a recipe and instructions. He can melt and mix it himself. Would that solve the problem?

I have yet to use agar so I'm unsure if you can keep melting it, I doubt it though. It would probably get contaminated if you added the starch or sugars.

I really need to get the supplies needed to work with agar. It seems to be a must in this hobby.

No need. I think I get it. You bought it in a pre-loaded beaker type thingy. Does it contain the nutrients or JUST the agar agar?

Okay, so it already contains the starch. I would heat it, (loosening the cap first, of course), enough to pour half of it into a sterile similar container. Send your friend the information that you received as well as the info on the bottle with his portion.

I can't believe that you are supposed to use it all in one go. It doesn't have to be thickly poured into the petri. Just enough to completely cover the bottom of the dish. As long as you don't get a contaminate in it you should be fine heating it a few times at least.

If you try it and it gets all f'ed up, I'll take FULL responsibility! :goodluck:

I'm going to buy raw agar agar and mix it up myself. Thank you very much though!  Hell, I don't even have petri dishes yet. Also, I think agar work will be easier with a flow hood. It just seems from the research that I've done to date, that having more room to work makes it one HELL of a lot easier!

There is no way that you can't re-heat it bra. It's just like melting wax. It gets gel-like again, and then you melt it again. You don't want to heat it enough to burn the starches or something. But I don't understand why you couldn't melt it.

I KNOW that it's the contaminates that you have to worry about. It already contains the food for "things" to grow. If the seaweed derivative itself contained the necessary nutes, we wouldn't need to add them, (or wherever you purchased it from wouldn't need to add them). I'd just use a still air box to split the stuff.

Sterile bottle though! Hopefully an experienced agar user will read this and grace you with a morsel of information. I have to hit the sack bra. "Talk" to you later.

edited for sleepy dumb shit...

By the looks of things, it's a sterile bottle of premade PDA. It'll contaminate unbelievably quickly.

Strange way of packaging it... it's usually a powder and made as required. The power doesn't contaminate like a premix as there's no water for growth.

To answer your question, if you plan on shipping some to a mate, you'll have to have it sterile in a sealed container.

so warming, squirting some in another container while in a glove box. shipping out is my method.

as long as im sterile is this ok?

and brandnewbie said/you said, that it might contam fairly quickly in its present condition, the bottle i got it in was never opend. there was a plastic seal around the bottle.

with that said, still think it will go bad if just left in its container?

still need a definate on the heating of it repeated times please.

What kind of agar is it.  Im assuming it agar agar.  I dont think youll need to do it in a gb.  He's gonna have to sterilize it anyway.

It's PDA, not plain garden variety agar agar. PDA contains the nutrients many organisms need for growth.

If you transfer in a GB, you still need to PC it to make it sterile, the inside of a GB doesn't contain sterile air and the agar will be contaminated as soon as it comes into contact with air.

The bottle is currently sterile, but as soon as it's opened and sucks back air it will be contaminated. It may take a while to grow anything, but you can be guaranteed it will.

So its already been premixed.  GB is still better than out in the open.  Although I didnt use premade agar.  Ive done small amounts of agar work in a gb and have lost few to contams.  I really dont see the harm in heating it up to liquify it and letting it cool again.  I could be wrong but like you said once its opened its going to have to be sterilized again.  If reheating is an issue than just take out a chunk like you guys were talking about.  Im sure if you keep reheating it itll lead to probs.  Best bet is to let someone with more experience like RR lead you in the right direction.

it's sterile right now in its bottle.  its basically a big petri dish, so yes it can contaminate.  you can heat that up several times but you have to be sterile about it when you pour it, you can pour it after you can handle it.  a glovebox would be ideal to pour that in and the container that you are pouring it into must be sterile also.

edit:  you dont have to pc it.  stick it in some boiling water until its liquid and then when you can handle it, pour it.
